PIGTOWN PICK OF THE WEEK The Limerick Literary Festival in honour of Kate O’Brien returns to Limerick this weekend. The festival, formerly known as The Kate O’Brien Weekend, will be celebrating its 4oth anniversary this year. Beginning in 1984 to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Limerick-born writer Kate O’Brien, the festival continues to honour the life and works of the author while attracting prominent participants from home and abroad. Events will take place in the Belltable and other venues across the weekend. More info here
A new exhibition Stories From A Cave by painters Grace Wallis and Anna Goodman is in the People’s Museum from Tue 20th to Wed 28th Feb.
The Nights Candles Are Burnt Out: Climate, Culture, Change & Community Exhibition will be on display in The Hunt Museum until Thursday 29th February 2024. The exhibition is co-created by companies involved in alternative energy supply and technology, local communities and contemporary artists interpreting the science and facts, translating the fears and aspirations. Due to popular demand, Seeing without Sight returns for a second run in the Hunt Museum (until 29th February). Seeing without Sight is a multi-sensory exhibition which enables visitors to experience a selection of Hunt Museum objects through tactile displays and audio descriptions. It has been delivered through an inclusive co-creation process with persons with visual impairment and confirms the museum’s commitment to expanding access and inclusion for persons with disability. 100 Years of Giving is a new exhibition at Limerick City Gallery of Art celebrating over 750 artworks donated to the public collections of Ireland by The Friends of the National Collections of Ireland (FNCI), which marks its centenary this year. Runs until April 7th. More info here
Eddie Cahill brings his Searching in the Dark exhibition to the Limerick City Gallery of Art. This exhibition has special significance for him as he spent time in Limerick Prison in the 1980s, and he considers his progress from City Jail to LCGA symbolic of his life’s journey. Limerick City Gallery of Art are delighted to present Cosmus by Brigid McLeer, an Irish artist living in London. This exhibition is a unique opportunity to see a large body of her work across a range of media since her last exhibition in Ireland. Runs until April 7th. More info here
Monday 19th February
IFI@Belltable is hosting a screening of Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron (2023) at 5pm and 8pm. It is a tale of an impressionable child on an odyssey in a mysterious and magical realm. The story begins during the Second World War when Mahito’s mother dies in a horrific hospital fire. After the war, he moves to the countryside with his father. There, he is subjected to the persistent attentions of a curious grey heron, who guides him to investigate an abandoned tower house, which one day he bravely enters. Tickets €8. More info here

Parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5k run that takes place every Saturday morning at 9.30am. Limerick has Parkruns at the UL Boathouse, Mungret Park and The Demense in Newcastle West. All you need to do is register once on parkrun.com to get your barcode and you can show up to any of the events.

The Limerick Literary Festival presents Vona Groarke in the Belltable at 10am. Groarke’s fourteenth book, Woman of Winter, (a contemporary re-telling of the ninth century Irish poem, ‘The Lament of the Hag of Beare’ with drawings by Isobel Nolan), was published by Gallery Press in August 2023. The Limerick Literary Festival presents Antoine Laurain in the Belltable at 1.45pm. Laurain is a novelist, screenwriter, journalist, director and collector of antique keys. A truly born and bred Parisian, after studying film, he began his career directing short films and writing screenplays. The Limerick Literary Festival presents William Sieghart in the Belltable at 3pm. Sieghart has spent most of his adult life promoting poetry and it’s powers. The Galway Zen Dojo is hosting an All Day Zen event in the People’s Museum from 9am. The day consists of 30-40 minutes long sessions of sitting (zazen), with walking meditation (kinhin), tea breaks and ceremonial lunch included in between, conducted in the soto zen tradition. €15 for a half day and €20 for full day. Junior Parkrun is a free, fun, and friendly weekly 2k event for juniors (4 to 14 year-olds) held every Sunday at 9:30am in Shelbourne Park, Shelbourne Road. It’s free to take part but you need to register online before your first session and bring along your barcode. More info here

The Limerick Literary Festival will present the 2024 Kate O’Brien Award in the Belltable at 12.30pm. The Kate O’Brien Award is an award for a debut novel from an Irish female author. The winner will be chosen from the following shortlist: “Slant” by Katherine O’Donnell, “The Red Bird Sings” by Aoife Fitzpatrick, and “The Last Days of Joy” by Anne Tiernan. The Limerick Literary Festival presents Claire Keegan in the Belltable at 3.30pm. Claire Keegan’s works of fiction are internationally acclaimed and are translated into thirty languages. Antarctica won the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. Walk the Blue Fields won the Edge Hill Prize for the finest collection of stories published in the British Isles.
