Well, that was some weekend, wasn’t it? Whether you were running, at one of the gigs, enjoying the village, or just having a few well-deserved drinks in the sun, we hope you had a great time. Riverfest may be over, but this week’s Limerick Events Guide will hopefully have enough things going on to keep you entertained. Bike Week runs from Sunday 11th to Sunday 18th May with loads of events taking place across the week. Bike Week is a celebration and promotion of the benefits of cycling! More info here

Whispers Of The Burren, an exhibition of Encaustic Landscapes by Kathleen Darcy and Anne Stewart, is on display in the People’s Museum from Tuesday 29th April to Tuesday 6th May. More info here 

Limerick Opera Festival takes place from Thursday 1st to Saturday 10th May.The Festival hosts a number of events ranging from performances to workshops during the annual festival weeks in May of every year. More info here 

URBANESQUE by Mike Byrne is on display in the Limerick City Gallery of Art until 11th May. Mike’s work is a continuous exploration of form and colour. He builds soft clay slabs into shapes that express the material’s malleability, and contrast that with sharp edges and severe cuts incised into the solid block forms. The surface patina is built up using multiple layers of coloured engobes and dry glaze. Each piece is fired numerous times until the desired depth of surface colour and texture is reached. Cut From The Same Cloth is on display in the Hunt Museum until 29th May. Arising from an art and health research collaboration the exhibition Cut From The Same Cloth centres around the fabric of our lives. A handwoven tapestry documents a unique community of members of local minority communities and biomedical researchers. Lorna Donlon is a tapestry weaver who merges the ancient art of weaving with scientific concepts. With a degree in Cell and Molecular Biology from the UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science, she creatively bridges art and science through tapestry and installations inspired by the scientific practices of categorising and labelling nature. BOW is a celebration of the individual pursuit of ideas, on display in the Limerick City Gallery of Art until June 8th. The exhibition is interested in how art resonates, soothes, and chimes with our common experience of life and living. The show includes Limerick native, and award-winning artist Stephanie Deady. Cork based Sarah O’Brien, who works from her studio near Kinsale. Dublin based Richard Proffitt with a studio in Balbriggan, and Fionna Murray who lives and works in Galway City. More info here 

An Ciúnas/The Silence by Marianne Keating is on display in the Limerick City Gallery of Art until June 8th. Marianne Keating is a London-based Irish artist and researcher whose practice examines intersecting and overlooked narratives of Irish emigration to the Caribbean, particularly Jamaica, where the Irish were recruited as a new labour force after the abolition of enslavement. Keating’s multidisciplinary film installations combine a range of archival materials, found footage, newly shot footage, text, and sound. More info here

Limerick Opera Festival and IFI@Belltable presents Maria in the Belltable at 5pm and 8pm. Maria is an introspective, haunted, slightly hallucinatory experience that retains a tight focus. The final week of Maria Callas, internationally feted opera diva, as she reflects upon her life from her beautifully appointed Paris apartment, in the company of butler and housekeeper (Pierfrancesco Favino and Alba Rohrwacher), who do what they can to stay on top of the diva’s prodigious drug intake. Seed Talks presents The Epic Histroy of The Lord of the Rings in Dolans Warehouse at 7pm. J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic tales of Middle-earth are a cultural phenomenon, still growing fifty years after his death. Join us to meet the man behind a whole mythology and follow in his footsteps as he creates The Lord of the Rings. Treaty City Brewery presents the latest of their Chef’s Table curated dining evenings with local chef Keith Pigott at 7pm. Experience a unique culinary journey, perfectly paired with brews from master brewer Gustavo. Experience Jóhann Jóhannsson’s mesmerising Drone Mass, with Chamber Choir Ireland and Crash Ensemble in the Lime Tree Theatre at 8pm. Drone Mass isn’t really a mass. It’s a mysterious and richly atmospheric work inspired by ancient Egyptian Coptic hymn. Since Jóhann Jóhannsson’s untimely death in 2018, Drone Mass has come to be regarded as the Icelandic composer’s crowning achievement.  Tickets €22/20. More info here

SOLD OUT An Evening with Nigel Owens is on in the University Concert Hall at 8pm. Nigel is one of the most engaging and humorous characters in the game of Rugby Union. He is also the only referee to be appointed for three consecutive Heineken Cup finals and forever will be renowned and admired for displaying a dry sense of humour and sharp wit when dealing with players during the heat of battle. Making this an evening simply not to be missed for any sports fan as he recounts stories from his life and career. There will also be an opportunity for a Q&A in the second half of the evening. Karen Fitzgibbon will launch her second book ‘Never Look Back’ in O’Mahony’s at 6.30pm. The Castleconnell native wrote her first crime fiction thriller ‘The World’s End’ during lockdown and is back with her latest page turner. More info here

The Drifters are back in the University Concert Hall at 7.30pm performing all their greatest hits! Timber Timbre are in Dolans Upstairs at 8pm. Six years after their last studio album, Taylor Kirk’s Canadian band Timber Timbre finally releases a new record, “Lovage” – his most accomplished and engrossing album to date. “Lovage” is an album marrying perverted piano ballads and spiritual jazz interludes on islands of exotica and psyche-prog with Spectoresque girl-group cabaret. Cadence Theatre Company presents A Rare Journey, Nora Joyce’s Odyssey comes to the Lime Tree Theatre at 8pm. A Rare Journey celebrates the life of a truly remarkable Irish woman Nora Joyce, in a highly entertaining roller-coaster 75-minute play. The play separates Nora from her famous literary alter ego Molly Bloom, and dispels the lazy myths that have often cast Nora as an inconsequential appendage of her famous husband. Written and performed by Paula Greevy-Lee, this one-woman show separates the funny, wise, sharp-witted, complex, and compassionate Nora from the half-truths that have dogged her since her death aged 67 in 1951. It’s Irish Night in Crew from 8pm. Suitable for all levels

Chief Keegan are in the Record Room at 9pm. Emerging from Dublin, Chief Keegan released their debut album, The Piles High Club in early 2024 which is garnering rave reviews and showcasing their tight grooves and catchy hooks. The quartet of keyboardist Luke Dunford, guitarist Mark Dudley, bassist Alan Elliott, and drummer Cian Hanley have quickly established itself on the Irish music scene and have brought their “feel-good music” to festivals such as Electric Picnic, Cork Jazz Festival, and the Bray Jazz Festival as well as touring relentlessly throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland. Creig Leach launches his new EP in Melody at 10pm. Producer and DJ Creig Leach has been playing bass music and throwing parties in Limerick for years. Playing original sets blending everything from Dubstep to Techno, as long as the atmosphere is right and the bass is huge. expect a mixed bag of tunes and obviously Plenty of originals. Known for his mesmerizing mastery of the sitar, Shakir will take you on a soulful journey through the beauty of Indian classical music. Legendary British singer-songwriter Ralph McTell is in the University Concert Hall at 8pm. With 2025 marking Ralph’s 80th year, this tour represents a milestone not just in his life, but in his extraordinary career. Composer of the Ivor Novello award winning, international hit song ‘Streets of London’,McTell is still passionate about performing and views this tour as a celebration of longevity, artistry, and the continued love for live music. Tickets €34. PIGTOWN PICK OF THE WEEK Trad Folkin’ Rocks presents Caoimhín in the Record Room at 9pm. Caoimhín (pronounced “kwee-veen”) is a producer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist forging a soulful new Gaelic sound, blending elements from the Irish tradition with alternative genres and concepts such as downtempo electronica, nu-disco, psychedelia and nature-based spirituality.  Tickets €14. Join Limerick Ladies Cycling Club for the Dawn Cycle, an early morning cycle to kick start Bike Week & bring you from Darkness into Light. Proceeds in aid of Pieta House. They will be meeting at 4:45am with a rollout at 5am sharp! The cycle will be leisurely paced and cover a distance of 35km. This event is open to all cyclists over 18; not just the ladies! Bikes, helmets, lights and high vis are essential! The event is free but donations to Pieta House are encouraged. More info here

Parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5k run that takes place every Saturday morning at 9.30am. Limerick has Parkruns at the UL Boathouse, Mungret Park and The Demense in Newcastle West. All you need to do is register once on parkrun.com to get your barcode and you can show up to any of the events.

The Wickham Way Market Stalls &  Food Court will be open 10am to 3pm (food court open til late).

As part of Bike Week, the Spinning 60’s Greenway Cycle starts at 10am at the Barnagh Greenway Hub. Limerick Sports Partnership and Locomotion Bike Rentals invite you on a social cycle along the beautiful Limerick Greenway. This cycle will go from Barnagh Hub to Abbeyfeale, then return to Barnagh for some refreshments in Platform 22. Bike & helmet will be provided. The University of Limerick Orchestra Summer Concert takes place in the University Concert Hall at 7.30pm. The ULO is honoured to be joined by Limerick’s-own Emma Downes, a graduate of the University’s MA in String Performance and a current fellow of London’s prestigious Sinfonia Smith Square orchestra. Also planned are exciting performances of Borodin’s Overture to his opera Prince Igor, and Bizet’s two Carmen orchestral suites. This promises to be a wonderful evening of romantic and virtuosic music as the orchestra closes out its 2024/2025 season. Tickets €15. More info here

No Stairway, the Irish Led Zeppelin, are in Dolans Warehouse at 8pm. Based in Galway, and made up of four of the finest musicians the city has to offer, No Stairway have a true love of this music and recreate Zeppelin’s live presence and studio albums as faithfully as possible. Pakie O’Callaghan presents A Celebration of The Stories of Eamon Kelly is on the Belltable at 8pm. The show honours the work of Ireland’s greatest ever storyteller. O’Callaghan takes Kelly’s best known stories including “The Umbrella”, “The Looking Glass” and “The Woman who Married the Blacksmith” and intersperses them with the haunting music of Sliabh Luachra, Kelly’s home place, to create a spellbinding evening of theatre. Pilates for Pieta with Claire Halpin takes place in the Crescent Shopping Centre at 10am. It’s a great opportunity to take a Pilates class while supporting a Pieta House.
