And just like that February is almost over. It’s another crazy week here in Limerick as the Students of UL and TUS celebrate Rag Week/Charity Week as well as the usual great lineup of live music, comedy, theatre, art and sport. If you’re looking for something to do, the Pigtown Times Limerick Events Guide’s got you covered. Check back during the week as I’m sure I’ll be adding more events.

It’s TUS Rag Week and UL Charity Week so expect to see a lot of Students about the place.

Seachtain na Gaeilge (SnaG) is the annual celebration of the Irish Language. It runs from the 1st-17th of March. Comhluadar Luimnigh and their partners have a great lineup of events in Limerick with something for all age ages and levels. More info here

The Limerick Choral Festival takes place from Friday to Sunday with the events in the Redemptorist Church, St Jospeh’s Church and the Sacred Heart Church. More info here

The Nights Candles Are Burnt Out: Climate, Culture, Change & Community Exhibition will be on display in The Hunt Museum until Thursday 29th February 2024. The exhibition is co-created by companies involved in alternative energy supply and technology, local communities and contemporary artists interpreting the science and facts, translating the fears and aspirations. Due to popular demand, Seeing without Sight returns for a second run in the Hunt Museum (until 29th February). Seeing without Sight is a multi-sensory exhibition which enables visitors to experience a selection of Hunt Museum objects through tactile displays and audio descriptions. It has been delivered through an inclusive co-creation process with persons with visual impairment and confirms the museum’s commitment to expanding access and inclusion for persons with disability. The exhibition Ireland Wildlife and Nature by Dominic McNamara is in the Hunt Museum Cafe (until 29th February). This is a FREE exhibition. More info here

100 Years of Giving is a new exhibition at Limerick City Gallery of Art celebrating over 750 artworks donated to the public collections of Ireland by The Friends of the National Collections of Ireland (FNCI), which marks its centenary this year. Runs until April 7th. More info here

Eddie Cahill brings his Searching in the Dark exhibition to the Limerick City Gallery of Art. This exhibition has special significance for him as he spent time in Limerick Prison in the 1980s, and he considers his progress from City Jail to LCGA symbolic of his life’s journey. Limerick City Gallery of Art are delighted to present Cosmus by Brigid McLeer, an Irish artist living in London. This exhibition is a unique opportunity to see a large body of her work across a range of media since her last exhibition in Ireland. Runs until April 7th. More info here

Monday 26th February

OSCAR WATCH IFI@Belltable is hosting a screening of The Holdovers (2023) at 5pm and 8pm. The year is 1971; Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti), Professor of Ancient Civilisations at an elite boarding school, has been saddled with the ignominious task of playing caretaker to a bunch of students who are unable to return home over the Christmas holidays. The Holdovers was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture. Tickets €8. More info here

The UCH Cinema Season continues with The Wolf Of Wall Street in UCH at 7.30pm. Based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stockbroker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government. Directed by Martin Scorsese. There’s a Contemporary Dance Class for Adults in Dance Limerick from 6pm to 7.15 pm and running for 7 weeks. These are suitable for both beginners and those with experience in Contemporary Dance. The goal is to help develop your creativity and technique. Through a series of energetic and challenging sequences and varied exercises, you will gain the skills and confidence to dance with ease. Classes run the following dates: 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th January and 13th, 20th, 27th February. The course costs €84 for 7 weeks. More info here

TYT presents The Weasel Trap, written and directed by John Hogan, in the Belltable at 7.30pm. During the height of prohibition, a group of entrepreneurs are looking to make a quick buck from bootlegging. The law are trying to clamp down on the underground speakeasies that have sprung up around the city, and the regular folk are just trying to make their way in the world without getting caught in the middle! Pints n’Purls (Crafting night) is in Crew Brewing from 7.30pm. For knitters, crocheters, cross-stitchers and generally sound people.

The Punchline Comedy Club presents John Colleary in UCH at 8pm. Apart from being one of the most in-demand comics in the land, John Colleary has also co-written and starred in IFTA nominated shows, The Savage Eye (RTÉ2) and Irish Pictorial Weekly (RTÉ One). Tickets €15. More info here

The Fitzgerald’s Woodlands Hotel is hosting a Cheltenham Preview Night in aid of Cliona’s Foundation at 8pm. It’s Children’s Book Club time in Watchhouse Cross Library at 3.30pm. Groups for 7-9 year olds and 9-12 year olds. Free event. More info here

There’s a Ballet Class for Adults in Dance Limerick from 6pm to 7.15 pm for Beginners and 7.30pm to 8.45pm for Improvers. Running for 7 weeks. Ballet supports fitness, good posture, balance, flexibility, coordination, spatial awareness and rhythm. This class will invite you to try new things in a non-judgmental and safe environment. Cyclone Theatre Company presents Hamlet: CYBERMADNESS in the Lime Tree at 9:45am & 1pm. A ground-breaking interpretation of Shakespeare’s timeless classic, adapted for the stage by Dr. Peadar Donohoe. Tickets €18. This is a school’s performance. More info here

There is an Over 50s Dance Class in Dance Limerick from 2pm to 3.15pm. Dance Limerick’s Over 50s Dance Classes are a fantastic way to maintain well-being and keep active. There’s a 6-week Beginner Swing Dance Course kicking off this week in the Record Room from 6.30pm to 8pm. €10 for a session or €45 for the full course (€35 for students/unemployed). No experience/partner necessary.

Monaleen NS Parents Association are hosting a workshop on Building Resilience in the Modern Tech Savvy Child in the Kilmurry Lodge Hotel at 6.30pm. A Talk by Dr. Tim O’ Connor on the Good Friday Agreement will take place at 7.30pm in The Honey Fitz Theatre, Lough Gur. Tim O’Connor is a former senior Irish Diplomat and former Secretary General (Chief of Staff) to the President of Ireland.  He was a Senior Official of the Irish Government Negotiating Team in the Talks in 1997/98 that led to the Good Friday Agreement. PIGTOWN PICK OF THE WEEK Wreckquiem is the latest play from Limerick playwright, Mike Finn (Pigtown, Bread Not Profits). Short-listed for Fishamble’s ‘Play For Ireland’ project, Wreckquiem will be performed in a, one-off, rehearsed reading at the Belltable at 8pm. Tickets €12. More info here

Saturday 2nd March

The Milk Market is open from 8am to 3pm.

Parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5k run that takes place every Saturday morning at 9.30am. Limerick has Parkruns at the UL Boathouse, Mungret Park and The Demense in Newcastle West. All you need to do is register once on parkrun.com to get your barcode and you can show up to any of the events.

The Wickham Way Market Stalls &  Food Court will be open 10am to 3pm (food court open til late).

Limerick Printmakers are hosting a Painterly & Trace Monoprint course covering from Sketchbook to Print at 10am. Monoprint is a printmaking process that incorporates a number of different techniques, and its simplicity and the spontaneity with which you can experiment and create prints makes it a really attractive option for creatives of all types. It’s Crafty Saturday in the Watch House Library from 11am to 4pm. This a free drop-in event. This is a self-guided activity so children must be accompanied and assisted by a grown up.

Limerick’s Footballers take on Clare in the Allianz Football League in Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale at 6pm

Lady Bird Lad is the solo project of Harry Hudson-Taylor. He plays Dolan’s Kasbah at 8pm. Tickets €19.50. More info here

The University Concert Hall hosts Mike Denver In Concert at 8pm. Mike Denver, one of Galway’s favourite sons is riding the crest of a wave. His audience is vast throughout Ireland, North and South and he is now making inroads in the UK with some sell out concerts in England and Scotland over the past couple of years. Joining him on the night are special guests Ronan Collins and the legendary Brendan Shine. Tickets €35. More info here

Run 061’s weekly Sunday Long Run starts at 9.30am at the UL Sports Arena. This a 65-minute run Time on Legs Run. Open to runners of all levels. More info here

Junior Parkrun is a free, fun, and friendly weekly 2k event for juniors (4 to 14 year-olds) held every Sunday at 9:30am in Shelbourne Park, Shelbourne Road. It’s free to take part but you need to register online before your first session and bring along your barcode. More info here

Sunday Yoga Flow takes place every Sunday in the Milk Market at 10am. No booking required, just bring a mat. €5 per person. All Levels Welcome

As part of Seachtain na Gaeilge, Ceardlann Oghaim (Ogham Workshop) with Fionán takes place in the Milk Market at 12pm. Learn how to create and design your very own ogham with an Irish phrase or word. Ogham is the celtic alphabet which is carved onto stone, during the workshop you will learn about the history of the ogham. Join us to celebrate our heritage, history and Gaeilge! This is a free family event through Irish. More info here

Imeacht Seachtain na Gaeilge 2024: Ceardlann Oghaim le Fionán

A Baby Market will take place in the Castle Oaks Hotel, Castleconnell from 12pm – 2pm. Market style events where parents buy and sell preloved baby, children and maternity goods. Limerick New Music Ensemble presents The Dining Controversy, a programme of work by living composers at Limerick City Gallery of Art at 2pm. This performance is part of the 2024 CoMA International Festival of Contemporary Music for All. This concert will celebrate the work of composer Derek Ball in his 75th year, including his wildly eccentric The Dining Controversy and the world premiere of his new work for the ensemble – Giant Steps. Limerick’s Ladies Footballers take on Carlow in Round 7 of the Lidl Ladies NFL Division 4 at 2pm in Feohanagh/Castlemahon GAA

Join Liam O’Brien in Off the Bone Gastropub from 2pm-4pm with some smooth crooning of soothing jazz to provide you with that perfect Sunday afternoon.

The Veronica Dunne International Singing Competition comes to the University Concert Hall at 3.30pm for the third concert in their Limerick Classical Concert Series. Accompanied by Dearbhla Collins and Mairead Hurley, the varied programme of operatic arias and other works will showcase the award-winning singers. The concert brings together Limerick soprano, Mairead Buicke and baritone, Owen Gilhooly-Miles with prize winners from the 2022 Competition, Dublin mezzo, Aebh Kelly and British tenor Aaron Godfrey – Mayes.
