The Fresh Film Festival is an annual celebration of the next generation of filmmakers. There’s workshops, screenings, discussion forums and the presentation of the Young Filmmaker of the Year Awards. Runs from the 15th to 21st April. More info here

Catalyst International Film Festival takes place from 18th-20th April. The Festival focuses exclusively on films that address under-representation on screen and behind the camera; gender equality, diversity and inclusion are core to their programming. More info here

The Limerick Lifelong Learning Festival is back from Monday 15th to Sunday 21st April 2024.  This year’s theme is Learn, Grow, Explore in 2024. Limerick Lifelong Learning Festival has something for everyone – wherever you live, whatever your age is and whatever your particular interests may be. Learning is promoted as fun with events including performances, debates, taster sessions, tours, displays and demonstrations. The free events and activities taking place include Art, IT Skills, Language Tasters, Entrepreneurship, Guided Tours, Open Days, Educational Pathways, Music and Cookery. More info here

The Top 8 Hip Hop & Street Dance Festival takes place in various venues across Limerick from Friday to Sunday. More info here

Limerick Museum presents a new exhibition Pagan Ireland and Saint Patrick. Via a selection of Bronze Age and Iron Age artefacts, this pop-up exhibition will explore the customs and beliefs that existed in Ireland prior to the arrival of Saint Patrick in the fifth century. Runs until April 15th. More info here

An exhibition telling the story of the Limerick Soviet will be on display at Watch House Cross Library from Tuesday 16th to Saturday 27th April (closed on Sunday 21st and Monday 22nd April). Free Entry. More info here

April is Poetry Month in Limerick. During the 30 days of April, with over 15 events and over 26 performers, Limerick’s annual poetry festival returns from Wednesday 3rd April to Sunday 28th April. More info here

Unboxing, an art exhibition of works by Wilma Vissers will be on display in Limerick Museum until Sunday 28th April. Wilma Vissers is a visual artist living and working in Groningen in the Netherlands. Her practice as a visual artist started in 1989. For the last 15 years, staying at artists residencies has become part of her work process. She went to artist residencies in Ireland, Scotland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. In Ireland, she has had working periods at Tyrone Guthrie, Cill Rialaig, and the Heinrich Böll Foundation on Achill Island. More info here

Jim Furlong and Barry Lemasney present their exhibition Dyad in the Friars Gate Theatre, Killmallock until 30th April. Barry Lemasney and Jim Furlong are graduates of The Limerick College of Art and Design. They both graduated with a BA honours degree in Fine Art as mature students. Both achieved a 1st class honour. While Barry and Jim have previously had solo exhibitions of their work, this exhibition will be their first joint venture together. Exhibition viewing is free and all are welcome. Inspiration’s Art Exhibition will be on display at Kilmallock Library for the month of April. A group exhibition of sixteen  creative people, each  person created a new piece of work inspired by their paired partner. Involved are Craftspeople, Photographers and Writers, Ciorcal Ealaíne Luimnigh (Artistic Circle of Limerick). More info here

The Turning Turns 40 exhibition in the Hunt Museum celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Irish Woodturners Guild (IWG) with a curated exhibition featuring 40 exceptionally turned wood forms that demonstrate excellence in craftsmanship and design. The exhibition runs until May 10th and is free for all to attend. It will then travel to four further venues across Ireland as part of the IWG anniversary celebrations. More info here

Monday 15th April

As part of the Fresh Film Festival, there’s a screening of 16 Ans (Sixteen) in association with IFI Education in the Omniplex at 10am. More info here

Run 061’s weekly Girls Night Run starts at 7pm. There are 3km, 4.5km and 6km routes. Open to runners of all levels. More info here

The IFI@Belltable Film Series continues with The Taste of Things in the Belltable at 5pm and 8pm. From Trân Anh Hùng, the Vietnamese director of The Scent of Green Papaya (1993) and At the Height of Summer (2000) comes this typically sumptuous and sensuous celebration of love and the culinary arts. Ben Portsmouth brings his show This Is Elvis to the University Concert Hall at 7.30pm. Taking you on a trip down memory lane, Ben and the band will leave you speechless with their stunning performances of Elvis favourites from all eras such as the 1950s, the iconic ’68 Comeback Special and Ben’s personal favourite, the 1970s Vegas concerts. PIGTOWN PICK OF THE WEEK Several Limerick musicians are coming together for the Gig For Dochas in Dolans Warehouse at 8pm. Featuring the Roadrunners, Emma Langford, dREA, Special Guest MC DJ Tom Fitz ( Termites ), Keith Forde, Citrus Fresh, the Limerick Gospel Choir and the 061 Songwriter Winner. Dochas is a support centre for children and adolescents with Autism. Dochas work with individuals, families, and groups and provides activity programmes,  art therapy, music therapy and general support for families who are on the Autism Journey. Tickets €20. The Catalyst International Film Festival presents a screening of Baltimore in the Belltable at 8pm followed by exclusive Q&A with Directors Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor. Baltimore is based on the infamous true story of an English heiress who became a revolutionary. Debutante Rose Dugdale (Imogen Poots) enjoys a life of wealth and privilege, but her rebellious nature soon leads her down a militant path. Amongst the political turmoil of the 1970s, her sympathy towards the IRA’s conflict evolves into radicalisation, culminating in an armed raid on an Irish estate with three comrades. Dublin-based Hip Hop duo Versatile play Amber Limerick at 10pm. The duo, consisting of Casper Walsh & Eskimo Supreme, take inspiration from early-90’s gangsta-rap. Their lyrics invoke an exaggerated lifestyle of Dublin’s north side. In 2019, they became the first Irish hip-hop act to sell out the 3Arena in Dublin. Tickets €25. More info here

Parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5k run that takes place every Saturday morning at 9.30am. Limerick has Parkruns at the UL Boathouse, Mungret Park and The Demense in Newcastle West. All you need to do is register once on parkrun.com to get your barcode and you can show up to any of the events.

Turning Pointe School of Ballet presents Triple Bill in the Lime Tree Theatre at 2:30pm and 5pm. This year’s show will demonstrate the students’ work on different dance styles. Practice to Performance demonstrates the work done in class every lesson to improve the dancers’ technique. The Candy Factory showcases the Preliminary and Junior students performing different sweet-themed dances. Aspirations 2024 involves all students from Junior and Senior classes exploring different dance styles of ballet, lyrical and contemporary dance… with a sprinkling of jazz thrown in. Tickets €20/€15. The Catalyst International Film Festival presents a screening of Verdigris in the Belltable at 8pm. Two very different women, Marian and Jewel, become unlikely friends as they realise that their similarities far outweigh their differences. Limerick Choral Union presents Verdi’s Requiem in the University Concert Hall at 8pm. Directed by Mr. Malcolm Green, the LCU & Orchestra is accompanied by 4 wonderful soloists. Junior Parkrun is a free, fun, and friendly weekly 2k event for juniors (4 to 14 year-olds) held every Sunday at 9:30am in Shelbourne Park, Shelbourne Road. It’s free to take part but you need to register online before your first session and bring along your barcode. More info here

As part of April is Poetry Month, John W Sexton presents Scéine and the Hag of Beare Meet Saint Killian – Tensions in the Creative Imagination: an essay, with accompanying poetry sequence at 3pm in The People’s Museum

The Limerick Classical Concert Series Presents The Vanbrugh & Friends in the University Concert Hall at 3.30pm. The Vanbrugh and their guests present a wonderfully contrasted programme in which each work is for string quartet plus a second viola. Boccherini was a contemporary of Haydn and an even more prolific writer of string chamber music; based in Spain for most of his adult life he developed a distinctive style of composition which never fails to delight.
