This week I got to check out the festivities around the Cresent on O’Connell Street. People of all ages out listening to music, playing in the sand (yes you read that correctly) and having great fun. National Heritage Week 2024 runs from Saturday 17th to Sunday 25th August with events across the country. More info here 

HER Outdoors Week runs from Monday to Sunday and Sport Ireland and thr Limerick Sports Partnership have a number of events across the week for women and girls to partake in. More info here 

Journey by Joseph Kelley is on display in the People’s Museum until the 15th August

Javier Tapia’s Báb0g exhibition is on display in the People’s Museum from the 9th to the 15th August. Open daily from 10am to 4pm. Currated by Dylan Ryan 

The Last Act Exhibition by Marie Hanlon & Rhona Clarke runs in the Limerick City Gallery of Art until 25th August. Last Act is a large-scale synchronised video installation made in collaboration with composer Rhona Clarke. The work presents the climate crises as something both real and abstract, as such it mirrors the human response to a changing earth. More info here

The In a Dream in a Happy House Exhibition by the Shell/Ter Artist Collective runs in the Limerick City Gallery of Art until 26th August. In a Dream in a Happy House is S/TAC’s third show to date and their first show that focuses solely on the collective itself rather than through the lens of a historical collection or role as artistic shelter. Featuring work by artists Diana Copperwhite, Allyson Keehan, Niamh McGuinne, Sharon Murphy and Geraldine O’Neill. More info here

Nature’s Narrative, an artistic tour of Clare and its coastlines by artist Helen Martin, is on display in the Hunt Museum Cafe during July and August. More info here

There’s an Exhibition of Ukrainian Art in the Friars Gate Theatre until 31st August

The Creepy Crawlies Love/Hate exhibition is in Hunt Museum until November 21st. This innovative exhibition aims to engage, educate, and inspire visitors of all ages through the fascinating world of bugs and their crucial roles in our biodiversity and daily lives. “Creepy Crawlies: Love/Hate,” is part of The Hunt Museum’s thematic focus of the year – biodiversity. The 061 Open Mic Night in Charlie Malones from 9pm

Run 061’s weekly 3Ks & Latties Run starts at 7.30am at Oahu. Open to runners of all levels. More info here

Limerick Sports Partnership’s weekly ActiveCities Walking Group is doing the Castletroy Urban Greenway Walk. Meeting at Kilmurry Lodge Hotel at 11am. More info here

As part of HER Outdoors Week, there’s a Clay Target Shooting session at 12pm at the Lazy Dog Shooting Ground, Kilfinane. Costs €5. More info here

The Big Limerick Seisiún with live music and dance takes place every evening in the Locke Bar at 5pm and 9pm

Sahaja Yoga are running a Free Meditation workshop in Limerick City Library at 6pm. More info here

As part of HER Outdoors Week, the LSP Couch to 5K running group is meeting at 6.30pm at UL  East Gate Carpark. For Women & Girls 14+. Costs €10 for programme which runs until October 1st. Each week you’ll combine walking and running, with the goal of completing the 5k at the Limerick Mini Marathon on October 6th. More info here

A Free Evening Walking History Tour of Limerick with the Limerick Civic Trust and the People’s Museum of Limerick will take place at 7pm from Arthur’s Quay Park. Tours will take one hour and will include visits to different locations along the King’s Island and also along the strand, and will finish up back in the centre of the city. The tour will also include visits to St Mary’s Cathedral, King John’s Castle, the Bishop’s Palace,the Treaty Stone, and the parks along the river. No booking required. More info here

As part of the Mayoral August Festivities, the Pop-up Cinema is showing a screening of the Greatest Showman at 7pm in the Wickham Way. Come Alive for an amazing evening of movie magic, fun and games and prizes for the best dressed. Tickets must be booked in advance. More info here

As part of HER Outdoors Week, there’s a Women On The Move Programme kicking off BCDA Hub, Ballyneety Golf Club at 7pm, running weekly until 19th September. Women On The Move is a physical activity programme for women looking get back into physical activity in a fun, social group environment. The programme focuses on improving functional fitness through strength, aerobic, flexibility and mobility exercises & activities. Costs €10 for the programme. More info here

Dance Limerick and the Limerick Mental Health Association are colloborating for a series of Movement for your Mind Dance Workshops in the Dance Limerick Studio from 9.30am to 11am. There’s a recommended €2 donation per class but if cost is an issues, please let the organisers know. Everyone over 18 is welcome. No upper age limit. No experience needed. The classes will be running until October. Come for a one-off session or for the full block of 10 classes. More info here

PIGTOWN PICK OF THE WEEK The Rape Crisis Midwest 10km Charity Paddle takes place on the River Shannon from Annacotty to St Michael’s Rowing Club. This Annual fundraising event raises vital funds for Rape Crisis Midwest and has been named Canoeing Ireland’s Charity Event of the year for the last 3 years – this is set to be another exciting event. This event is open to complete beginneres who wish to hire equipment, as well as expereinced kayakers. Own Kayak Ticket -€25 per person. Rent a Kayak & Equipment (paddle, buoyancy aid, helmet) Ticket – €50 per person. More info here 

Parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5k run that takes place every Saturday morning at 9.30am. Limerick has Parkruns at the UL Boathouse, Mungret Park and The Demense in Newcastle West. All you need to do is register once on parkrun.com to get your barcode and you can show up to any of the events.

Breathe Better Yoga hosts Park Yoga every Saturday (weather dependent) in the People’s Park from 11 a.m. It is donation-based. Please bring your own yoga mat.

Saturday Arts & Crafts for Children takes place from 11am to 4pm at Watch House Cross Library. A fresh set of craft materials will be provided. Collect your art materials from the library desk and make something to take home, to display in the library or both! This is a self-guided activity so children must be accompanied and assisted by their grown-up. No booking required. More info here

As part of Heritage Week, A Nature Walk will take place on the West Limerick Greenway from 11am to 1pm. There are around 100 species of wild plants in the area, with a particular abundance of liverworts, mosses, and ferns. As part of HER Outdoors Week, the HER Outdoors Festival takes place in O’Brien’s Park from 3pm to 7pm. The HER Outdoors Adventure Festival is more than just an evening in the park; it’s an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone, try something new, and meet a community of supportive women who share your passion for the outdoors. Whether you’re looking to pick up a new hobby, stay active, or simply enjoy a fun-filled evening, this festival has something for everyone.Registration is free for the festival, but spaces for certain activities are limited, so early sign-up is recommended. The Blades will perform in Dolans Warehouse at 8pm. Since reforming in 2013 they have played sold out gigs in Dublin’s Olympia Theatre and performed their classic single ‘Downmarket’ on The Late Late Show. Ticket €30. More info here

Junior Parkrun is a free, fun, and friendly weekly 2k event for juniors (4 to 14 year-olds) held every Sunday at 9:30am in Shelbourne Park, Shelbourne Road. It’s free to take part but you need to register online before your first session and bring along your barcode. More info here

Croissant Run Club Limerick, a fun social running group, meets at 9.45am at Arthurs Quay Park for a 3.5km run (followed by a Crossiant). More info here
