Limerick Events Guide – 20th-26th January

Hard to believe we’re already into the third week of 2025. The third Monday in January is often described as Blue Monday, the most depressing day of the year. However, a brief glance at this week’s Limerick Events Guide will assure you that there’s no reason to be blue around here. As always, please spare this post with your friends so they also know what’s going on in Limerick.

Ormston House presents The Limerick Show, a showcase of works by emerging and established artists. This is a celebration of the breadth of art being produced in Limerick (city and county) today, showcasing thirty-nine artists and spanning painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and video. This edition has no theme, but there are recurring motifs and subjects. Runs from the 29th November to the 1st February. More info here

Discover Kwaidan – Encounters with Lafcadio Hearn at The Hunt Museum, showcasing an extraordinary collection of prints by 20 Japanese artists and 20 Irish artists. Inspired by Hearn’s ghostly tales, the works reflect a range of techniques and artistic perspectives, each transforming these eerie stories into compelling visual pieces. The exhibition explores the intersection of folklore, storytelling, and the shared cultural heritage between Ireland and Japan. Runs until 22nd February. More info here

The IFI@Belltable Film Series presents Anora (2024) in the Belltable at 5pm and 8pm. Mikey Madison is a revelation as charismatic sex worker Anora in Sean Baker’s wildly entertaining, frenetically paced comedy. Ani, as she prefers to be called, meets Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn), the son of a Russian oligarch, in a New York strip club when he requests a dancer who can speak Russian (she is of Uzbek descent); the young man is immediately smitten, asking her to be his girlfriend for a week of raucous, no-expense-spared partying, that culminates in an impromptu wedding in Las Vegas. The honeymoon period comes to an abrupt end when Ivan’s father sends his harassed fixer, Toros (Karren Karagulian), and his henchmen to effect an annulment by whatever means necessary. When Ivan splits, a madcap chase across the city ensues with Baker ratcheting up the mayhem to near Safdie levels of nervous tension and hilarity. Tickets €8. More info here
