The 17th Polish Arts Festival takes place from Thursday 26th to Sunday 29th September. Established in 2007, PAF is a community organisation that supports the intersection between artists and communities of place and interest By connecting with, presenting and reflecting on contemporary Polish and Irish artistic and cultural expression. Odysseys of Self by Tina O’Connell is on display in the Limerick City Gallery of Art until 6th October. Tina O’Connell received the Limerick City Gallery of Art/LCGA Graduate Exhibition Award in 2024. The works are autobiographical narratives, sculpted reflections of her experiences navigating the complex realms of memory, motherhood, mental health and contemporary society. Free Entry. The Patching Femininity Exhibition by Olga Anacka will be on display at the Limerick City Gallery of Art from the 26th September to the 25th October. In Patching Femininity, artist Olga Anacka explores and challenges visual representations of femininity and the female body in western culture. Comprising a dozen embroidered tapestries, this body of work is very personal, with images derived from the artist’s memory and family archive, juxtaposed with symbolic representations of the feminine drawn from internet searches and commonplace stereotypes. The Woman of The Seine/Topielica Exhibition will be on display at the Limerick City Gallery of Art from the 26th September to the 25th October. “Woman from the Seine” is the original project of Dorota Korczycka-Bąblińska, an actress of the Zdrojowy Animation Theater in Jelenia Góra, a puppeteer, a versatile artist who also works with ceramic sculpture, creating costumes and scenography. Vivienne Bogan’s Spontaneous Self Exhibition is on display in the Limerick City Gallery of Art until 10th November. The exhibition is the first major institutional show by the artist in LCGA. Bogan is a graduate of LSAD and has had an illustrious career with work in several public and private collections nationally and internationally. Free Entry. More info here
Ormston House presents The Sky is Falling!, a group exhibition featuring contributions from Ceara Conway, Seoidín O’Sullivan, Scott Rogers, and Christopher Steenson, on display until the 16th November. Featuring new and existing works, the exhibition is the culmination of several years of research into the corncrake, a species of bird approaching extinction in Ireland and the UK. More info here
The Creepy Crawlies Love/Hate exhibition is in Hunt Museum until November 21st. This innovative exhibition aims to engage, educate, and inspire visitors of all ages through the fascinating world of bugs and their crucial roles in our biodiversity and daily lives. “Creepy Crawlies: Love/Hate,” is part of The Hunt Museum’s thematic focus of the year – biodiversity. Cinema Paradiso is being screened in the University Concert Hall at 7.30pm. A celebration of youth, friendship, and the everlasting magic of the movies. A famous filmmaker recalls his childhood in Sicily, when he fell in love with the pictures at his local cinema, and formed a deep friendship with the cinema’s projectionist. This beloved film shows the changes in cinema and the dying trade of traditional filmmaking and screening. It also explores a young boy’s dream of leaving his small village to pursue big dreams in the outside world. Directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, and featuring Ennio Morricone’s beautiful, iconic score. Limerick Jazz Festival presents Benjamin Boone’s Confluence Band in Dolans Upstairs at 8pm. American saxophonist and composer Benjamin Boone’s Boone, a Professor of Music at California State University Fresno, came to collaborate with this all-star band of John Daly (drums), Joe O’Callaghan (guitar), Dan Bodwell (bass) and JaYne (voice) while serving a U.S. Fulbright Scholar at the University of Limerick’s Irish World Academy of Music and Dance in 2022-23. PIGTOWN PICK OF THE WEEK The Limerick Anti-Racism Network presents LimROCK Against Racism: Unity Through Community takes place in Pharmacia at 8pm. Limerick’s diverse community and activists will gather to promote equality, combat disinformation and celebrate community through music. LimROCK Against Racism, a free event, will feature an eclectic collection of local acts whose values are aligned with the ethos of equality, respect and breaking down barriers. Those attending can expect music from local heroes Steve O’ Dings, Emma Langford, 50 Foot Woman, Annie Cheevers, Meadhbh Hayes, Some Images of Paradise and Major Feen, all spread across two floors and staggered throughout the evening so that everyone can experience the huge variety of style and talent on offer. Prima Volta and the Limerick Jazz Festival presents Five To Two in the Record Room at 9pm. Five to Two are a Dublin jazz trio consisting of Matthew Breen (piano), Jonah Byrne (double bass) and Finn Mac Anna (drums). They have become known for their engaging live shows; performing with their signature clash of pure nostalgia and infectious energy. In the time since their debut project, the band have spent time developing and honing their sound which is evident on their most recent record, ‘Talk Soon’, that sees nods to a myriad of influences including organ repertoire, hip-hop and modern jazz, contrasting sincerity and playfulness. The Polish Arts Festival presents The Circle of Life, a Family Fabric Workshop with Olga Anacka in the Belltable at 10am. This workshop investigates the human figure and how it may be changing over the years for both males and females. The Limerick Jazz Festival presents the Andreas Varady Trio and Benjamin Boone’s Confluence Quintet in Dolans Upstairs from 1pm to 8pm. Andreas Varady is a contemporary jazz guitarist of Hungarian gypsy descent, raised in Ireland and currently based in Vienna. Reaching an international audience in 2010 alongside early mentors such as David Lyttle, Martin Taylor, Tommy Emmanuel and Quincy Jones, he has released five albums, including one for Verve featuring collaborations with Gregory Porter, Roy Hargrove, Dirty Loops and many others. He has performed worldwide for over 15 years, with highlights shows at the Blue Note clubs in New York and Tokyo, Montreux Jazz Festival and Ronnie Scott’s, London, where he was the youngest headliner in the club’s history in 2010.
