I always say there’s so much going on in Limerick but it seems like, in the last few weeks, things have gone into overdrive. There’s so much going on at the moment. I’m really struggling to fit it all into the printed events guide.

All Week (2nd-8th October) 

The 40th EVA International will take place from 31 August – 29 October 2023 across venues in Limerick city and beyond. EVA International is Ireland’s Biennial of Contemporary Art. Responding to the theme of Citizenship, the 40th edition will feature a ‘Guest Programme’ curated by Sebastian Cichocki, presented alongside new artist commissions as part of EVA’s Platform Commissions and Partnership Project initiatives. Ireland through my Lens is an Exhibition of photographs from travels around Ireland by amateur Limerick photographer Michael Brislane. It will be on display in Saint Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick until Saturday 30th September.

Limerick’s All-Ireland Glory 1887-2023 is a special exhibition of Limerick GAA memorabilia, to mark four milestones in Limerick’s proud history of All-Ireland glory. It’s in the Limerick Museum until Tuesday 31st October.

Postcards from Limerick is a special exhibition in St Mary’s Cathedral celebrating 1100 years since the first Viking settlement was founded in Limerick. It contains possibly the largest collection of Limerick-related postcards ever assembled. Runs until November 17th. More info here

It’s Limerick Positive Aging Week this week. Limerick Sports Partnership has lots of fun, events for you to try, along with ongoing programmes to join! You can check out the full schedule here

The Bualadh Bos Children’s Festival takes place in the Lime Tree and Belltable from the 5th to 14th October with loads of great events taking place for younger folks to enjoy. More info here

The Éigse Michael Hartnett Literary & Arts Festival takes place in Newcastlewest from Thursday to Sunday. The Festival aims to honour Michael’s legacy by bringing together poets and musicians, artists and thinkers for a great four days of events. More info here

The Joyce Brothers Music Festival is a weekend of music, song, dance, and history celebrating the wonderful legacy of brothers Patrick Weston Joyce and Robert Dwyer Joyce, natives of Glenosheen. It will take place from the evening of Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th October in Kilfinane. More info here

The Ballyhoura Walking Festival takes place from Friday to Sunday with walks for all levels. More info here

The ABC for Mental Health Art Exhibition is on display in Treaty City Brewery until Thursday 5th October

Monday 2nd October

As part of Positive Ageing Week, the Activator Walking Programme takes place in Clare St Park at 10am. €10 Registration Fee. More info here

Scéalta & Rannta (Storytime and Rhymes as Gaeilge) will take place in the City Library at 10.30am. This is a free event and is suited to younger children. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Booking is not required. More info here

The IFI@Belltable Film series continues with a screening of Past Lives at 5pm & 8pm. The role played by chance and circumstance in our lives is delicately explored in Celine Song’s poignant feature debut that follows the shared histories of two young Koreans as their paths interweave across continents and timelines. There’s a Tango class at the Record Room (Commercial Bar) from 7:30pm. €10 per class. All levels are catered for.

Limerick Sports Partnership’s weekly ActiveCities Walking Group is doing the Three Bridges  Walk. Meeting at Arthurs Quay Park (old Tourist Office) at 11am. No need to register. Just turn up and enjoy the walk.

The West Limerick Walk is taking place in the Newcastle West Demesne at 11am. Meet at the entrance to the Demesne (Soccer Car Park). Just come along and enjoy the walk

As part of the Bualadh Bos Children’s Festival, When the Moon Spun Round is in the Lime Tree Theatre at 6.30pm. A beautifully dark and enchanting new show for young audiences from Fidget Feet and Ceol Connected. This charming and uplifting take on the stories and poetry of WB Yeats in the book When the Moon Spun Round edited by Noreen Doody and illustrated by Shona Shirley Macdonald. The Éigse Michael Hartnett Literary & Arts Festival kicks off with a performance by the Hit Machine Drummers in the Square and a Lantern Parade up Bishop Street to the Library. Éigse Michael Hartnett 2023 will be officially opened by the Mayor at 8pm followed by the presentation of the Michael Hartnett Poetry Award to this year’s winner. More info here

The Joyce Brothers Music Festival kicks off with a Gala Opening Night at 7.30pm in the Old Chapel Rooms, Kilfinane (V35 V998). This is a celebration of the history and life of the Joyce Brothers through music, song, dance, led by Ciarán Ó Gealbháin and Angela Hennessy with special guests. Tickets: Adult €15, Child €10. The Paul McKenna Band play Upstairs in Dolans at 7.30pm. Formed in Glasgow in 2006, The Paul McKenna Band came together through a combined love of traditional music and an ambition to carry that music forward using original compositions. Tickets from €13.50. More info here.

Limerick’s own Karl Spain brings his new show Well, What Did You Expect? to Dolans Warehouse at 7.30pm. In the show, Karl talks about how we are where we are and how to solve all the world’s problems. Tickets from €20. More info here

Indie-electronica band, Super Extra Bonus Party are in Dolan’s Kasbah from 8pm. The Kildare band won the 2007 Choice Music Prize and are due to release a new album, Late Nite 99, soon. Tickets €10. More info here

The Illegal Eagles are an Eagles tribute band. Celebrating 50 years of the Eagles, they play UCH at 8pm. Featuring the very best from the Eagles’ catalogue of classics, including ‘Hotel California’, ‘Desperado’, ‘New Kid In Town’ and many more. Tickets €35. More info here

As part of the Bualadh Bos Children’s Festival, Branar presents Rothar in the Belltable 1pm & 3pm. In the little bike shop at the end of town, a world of adventure awaits. Two boys and their bikes travel the world in a show that conjures play from the everyday and where anything is possible. Tickets €10pp. (School Shows 10am & 12pm). More info here

As part of the Éigse Michael Hartnett Festival, author and columnist Michael Harding will entertain with excerpts from his many bestselling books along with musings and stories, served up with a light lunch. As part of the Éigse Michael Hartnett Festival, the Odd-Being in the Age of Humans exhibition by Knockaderry-based artist Gerard Fenniman will be on display in the Red Door Gallery, Newcastlewest during the festival. At 3pm, Gerard will give a short talk about his work. Free Event.

The Bualadh Bos Children’s Festival welcomes world-famous visual artist Boss Rob for this once in a life time event in the Belltable at 1pm. This is a new interactive workshop by playmaker Darren Yorke (playing Boss Rob), playwright Liam McCarthy, and illustrator Duffy Mooney Sheppard. Tickets €10. One of Ireland’s leading pianists, Michael McHale opens the Limerick Classical Concert Series in UCH at 3.30pm. Expect a beautiful programme of pieces by Beethoven, Chopin, Schubert and more. Tickets €20. More info here

As part of the Bualadh Bos Children’s Festival, the Belltable is hosting a screening of classic family movie The Goonies at 6pm. It’s a story about a group of kids who live in the ‘Goon Docks’ neighbourhood of Astoria, Oregon. Calling themselves The Goonies, they attempt to save their homes from foreclosure and, in doing so, they discover an old treasure map that takes them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate.
