Future Limerick: Climate Arts Festival is a week-long, multi-disciplinary festival taking place from May 18th to 25th, presented by award-winning theatre company Sunday’s Child in association with Lime Tree Theatre/Belltable. Future Limerick explores the climate crisis through the arts. Their programme comprises of top-quality climate-themed theatre, cinema, music and poetry. It will engage, entertain, spark debate and help people think outside the box around this urgent issue that can so often feel overwhelming. More info here
Icarus & the Fine Art of Re-Surfacing, an exhibition of paintings & prints by Gavin Hogg will be on display in the Spacecraft Artists Studio until Saturday 25th May from 11am – 5pm each day. More info here
The Mountains, Fall on Us Exhibition by Austin McQuinn is in the Limerick City Gallery of Art from Friday 26th April to Sunday 9th June. Mountains, Fall on Us invokes the poetic object as a means of salvation, alongside micro gestures of iconoclasm. Paintings on discarded military engravings, a tower of Aran sweaters, medals, clay tongues, sequins, bog oak and upholstery fabric are reclaimed and refashioned with a new baroque sensibility. Queered with an optimism and infused with what the artist has called ‘a kind of mad hope’, McQuinn takes possession of these found images and objects, painting over them with ink in an extravagant and decadent defacement. As part of the Future Limerick Festival, there’s a screening of The End We Start From (2023) in the Belltable at 5pm and 8.15pm. A woman tries to find her way home with her newborn while an environmental crisis submerges London in floodwaters. Featuring Jodie Comer and Joel Fry this film looks at the fallout from the climate emergency. Tickets €8. More info here

As part of the Future Limerick Festival, Emerging Limerick Filmmakers are hosting a Screening of two short films, followed by a panel discussion, in the Belltable at 7pm. The films Rat King and Mob the Trench were developed by Emerging Limerick Filmmakers’ members with the support of professional mentorship. Both look towards the future tackling topics around anxiety, belief and personal identity in the face of a contested place in a changing world. As part of the Bealtaine Festival, there’s a free film screening Birdsong in the Friars Gate Theatre at 8pm. Ornithologist Seán Ronayne from Cobh, Co. Cork is on a mission to record the sound of every bird species in Ireland – that’s nearly 200 birds. Often joined by his partner Alba, he travels to some of the country’s most beautiful and remote locations to capture its most elusive species and soundscapes: the busy seabird colony of Skellig.

The Irish Composers’ Collective presents Duos in the Hunt Museum from 1pm to 2pm.
