Seven Fun Things To Do This Week – 19th October

There’s a lot of uncertainty around at the moment. As we write this, we’re no closer to figuring out if we’re moving to level 5 or even to level 4. All we can do is keep doing our best. Keep your distance, wash your hands and wear a mask.

With no events going on, we thought a different approach to the weekly listing was needed. So for the next few weeks, we’re going to bring you a list of Seven Fun Things You Can Do This Week. It will be a mix of online events, walking routes, music/book recommendations, sporting matches and much, much more. If you have a suggestion for a fun thing to do, drop us an email to [email protected]

Support Local

There are a lot of businesses who have adapted to the level 3 restrictions. We’ve made a handy list for you to see what businesses are still operating. If you can at all, please try to support at least one of these businesses this.

Bualadh Bos Festival

The Bualadh Bos Children’s Festival has moved out of the Lime Tree and Belltable and onto the internet this year. Coming up this week they have Make Your Own Puppet with Branar Téatar, Build your own Limerick with Maeve Clancy and The Half Featuring a monologue from Roald Dahl’s – The Witches Performed by Jean McGlynn

IFI Horrorton

Meanwhile (for the grownups), the IFI’s Horronton has also moved online with a number of films available to rent and watch online (from behind your couch) from the 22nd to the 26th. So if you like a bit of a scare this is one for you. (If horror isn’t your thing, IFI@HOME has a load of other great films as well). Find out more on https://www.ifihome.ie/page/horrorthon2020/

Go for a walk – Three Bridges

Each week, we’ll feature a walking route for you to explore (alternating between City & County). We’ll start with the obvious one – the Three Bridges Walk. The traditional starting/finishing point is Arthur’s Quay Park. The route takes you along the riverside passing the boardwalk, Clancy Strand and O’Challaghan’s Strand. Along the way, you’ll come across Terry Wogan, the Dock Worker’s Memorial, the Treaty Stone, King John’s Castle and St Mary’s Cathedral. You can find out more here: https://www.limerick.ie/discover/eat-see-do/sports-recreation/activities/walking/limerick-city-routes/three-bridges-walking

Tales from the Castle

Another one for the smaller folk. Each week, one of the colourful characters from King John’s Castle will read a bedtime story for your kids from inside the castle. A new story will be posted every Saturday at 7 pm on https://www.facebook.com/KingJohnsCastle

Limerick vs Clare (TBC)

Hurling fans wait with bathed breath to see if Limerick’s clash with Clare in Thurlus goes ahead on Sunday. The game doubles up as both the Munster Championship Quarter Final and the Final of the National League (as both teams were deemed the winners of their respective divisions). Throw in at 3.45 pm. The game will be live on RTÉ2.

Eoin Deveraux’s Playlists on Spotify

Eoin Deveraux (aka “UL’s Professor of Pop”) has been creating a weekly playlist for UL’s First Seven Weeks initiative. Even if you’re not a student, there are some absolutely cracking tunes each week. Well worth a listen

We hope you enjoy this week’s suggestions. We have another list almost ready for next week. If you’re partaking in any of our suggestions, why not take a photo and post it using the hashtag #PigtownPics
