One week down, 51 to go. 2024 is flying by, isn’t it? Well if it isn’t there are plenty of options in this week’s Limerick Events Guide to keep you occupied. Our Pigtown Pick of the Week is the hilarious Jarlath Regan who makes a welcomed return to the Lime Tree Theatre after a sell-out show back in September. Meanwhile, Daoirí Farrell and Aoife Scott are in Dolans. And on top of all that, several of our favourite weekly events make a welcome return this week.

Sleeping Beauty is in the University Concert Hall until January 14th. Sleeping Beauty will see well-known, writer, actor, comedian and television presenter, Bernard O’Shea make his Panto debut. Along with Panto favourite Richie Hayes as Muddles, legendary panto Dame Myles Breen as Nurse Noni, Ruth Berkley as Maleficent, John Sharpson as Seamus, Evan O’ Hanlon as Prince Peter and Esther Brady as Princess Beauty. Sleeping Beauty

Let’s go Shopping! A History of Retail in Limerick Exhibition will be on display in the Limerick Museum from until Thursday 25th January. The Screendance exhibition is at the Limerick City Gallery of Art until the 28th of January, showcasing dance visual art and film in association with the Light Moves Festival. Curated by Morleigh Steinberg, ARCANE Space. More info here

Limerick City Gallery of Art is hosting a new exhibition, Nothing Strange or Startling by George Shaw, a Turner nominated artist, until the 28th of January. More info here

An Exhibition The Art of the Stitch – The Legacy of Maude Kearney is now on display at Limerick Museum and will be on display until Wednesday 31st January. Free admission. More info here

Get Well Soon (prologue) is a group exhibition in Ormston House (until Feb 3rd) drawing a connection between human and planetary exhaustion. Curated by Lucy Lopez. More info here

The Nights Candles Are Burnt Out: Climate, Culture, Change & Community Exhibition will be on display in The Hunt Museum until Thursday 29th February 2024. The exhibition is co-created by companies involved in alternative energy supply and technology, local communities and contemporary artists interpreting the science and facts, translating the fears and aspirations. Due to popular demand, Seeing without Sight returns for a second run in the Hunt Museum (until 29th February). Seeing without Sight is a multi-sensory exhibition which enables visitors to experience a selection of Hunt Museum objects through tactile displays and audio descriptions. It has been delivered through an inclusive co-creation process with persons with visual impairment and confirms the museum’s commitment to expanding access and inclusion for persons with disability. As part of the first-fortnight festival, visual artists Helen Delany and Brenda Aherne of Electronic Sheep bring their to the Notifications Off Exhibition to the Hunt Museum from the 5th-10th of January. Notifications Off aims to open up a conversation around mental health awareness. The knitted Tapestry focuses on the positive and depicts places, people and objects that bring happiness, particularly in times of sadness. It also portrays activities that improve mental health and day-to-day life. This is a free exhibition. More info here

Monday 8th January

Limerick Sports Partnership are running Swimming Lessons for Over 55s (Deep Water) in Bawnmore Swimming Pool at 1pm for 4 weeks (until 29th Jan). 40-minute session led by a certified instructor. The Cost is €24 for a 4-week programme. More info here

UL Sport are running a Couch to 5k/10km/Half Marathon programme over 7 weeks from the 8th January to the 21st Feb. Suitable for all levels. Email Derek to Book

There’s a Contemporary Dance Class for Adults starting in Dance Limerick from 6pm to 7.15 pm and running for 7 weeks. These are suitable for both beginners and those with experience in Contemporary Dance. The goal is to help develop your creativity and technique. Through a series of energetic and challenging sequences and varied exercises, you will gain the skills and confidence to dance with ease. Classes run the following dates: 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th January and 13th, 20th, 27th February. The course costs €84 for 7 weeks. More info here

Wednesday 10th January

There’s a Ballet Class for Adults starting in Dance Limerick from 6pm to 7.15 pm for Beginners and 7.30pm to 8.45pm for Improvers. Running for 7 weeks. Ballet supports fitness, good posture, balance, flexibility, coordination, spatial awareness and rhythm. This class will invite you to try new things in a non-judgmental and safe environment. Limerick’s Hurling Team are away to Clare in the Munster Senior Hurling League in Sixmilebridge at 7pm

Run 061’s weekly Social Run starts at 7pm at the Strand. This is a 4.5km run at an easy Conversation Pace. Open to runners of all levels. More info here

As part of the First Fortnight Festival, Scales and Scéals is a family-friendly afternoon of story and music in the Limerick City Art Gallery at 3pm. Come and listen to The Sing Out with Strings Sinfonia, featuring young musicians from the Irish Chamber Orchestra’s schools programmes with entertaining tales and stories courtesy of Narrative 4. Limerick Swing Dance are running a Charleston dance course over 6 weeks in the Record Room from 6:30pm to 8pm. Staring on Thursday, 11th January and running every Thursday for 6 weeks. Treaty City Brewery are hosting Feoil agus Ól at 7.30pm. This magical feast is held in the brewery with a charcuterie of local meats and cheeses from award-winning executive chef Keith Piggott. Prepare for a savage night of flavours this January. Tickets cost €50. More info here

As part of the First Fortnight Festival, visual artists Helen Delany and Brenda Aherne (AKA Electronic Sheep) created the knitted tapestry Notifications Off which is on display in the Hunt Museum. They will be running a special Free Workshop at 11am that will allow attendees to delve into their own creativity. It will explore the themes and stories of art and music detailed on the tapestry and you will be invited and facilitated to share your creativity through image making, text, textiles and collage. The workshop will be informal, relaxed and fun. Materials will be provided. No prior art experience is required and all are welcome. Booking is essential. More info here

Parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5k run that takes place every Saturday morning at 9.30am. Limerick has Parkruns at the UL Boathouse, Mungret Park and The Demense in Newcastle West. All you need to do is register once on parkrun.com to get your barcode and you can show up to any of the events.

Selfbuild Extend & Renovate Live takes place in the UL Arena on Saturday & Sunday from 10am to 6pm. More info here

Limerick Sports Partnership is running Cool Movers in the Factory Southside Youth Space at 10am-11am for 5-8 year-olds and 11am-12pm for 9-12 year olds. Their inclusive Cool Movers programme introduces children to FUNdamental skills through fun games and activities over a 5-week period (until the 10th Feb). The Cost is €10 for a 5-week programme. Dance Limerick’s Saturday Dance Clubs for Kids are a fantastic way for our young dancers to keep exploring their creativity, express themselves, make new friends and learn new moves and routines. 10am-10.45am and 11am-11.45am for tots aged 2-4, 12pm-12.45pm for kids aged 5-8 and 1-2 pm for kids aged 9-14. As part of the First Fortnight Festival, the No Show exhibition is in Limerick City Builds (Upper Clare Street) at 3pm. This exhibition will feature an impressive array of creative endeavours by the talented learners from Limerick City Build. This showcase will encompass a diverse collection of media crafted during the creative journey behind the NO Show project, offering a captivating display of works, research edits, and innovative concepts. As part of the First Fortnight Festival, there is a Guided Street Art Walking Trail leaving Honan’s Quay at 6pm. The trail features 17 captivating pieces that form an eclectic and engaging urban art collection across Limerick City. In collaboration with urban artists Draw Out, the Limerick Street Art cultural trail highlights Limerick’s finest Street Art by nationally and internationally acclaimed artists. This is a free event. Cornelius Patrick O’Sullivan brings his stand-up comedy show, A Bird in the Hand, to Dolans Kasbah at 7.30pm. Tickets €15. More info here

PIGTOWN PICK OF THE WEEK Jarlath Regan will perform in the Lime Tree Theatre at 8pm. After a recent sell-out show and due to popular demand, Jarlath returns to Limerick with his epic standup show following millions of downloads and views on Youtube, TikTok and Instagram. Tickets €28. SOLD OUT The Absolute Eagles, Europe’s premier tribute to American rock band, The Eagles, will play in Dolans Warehouse at 8pm. Playing all their hits from 1972 right up to the modern-day classics. More info here

Junior Parkrun is a free, fun, and friendly weekly 2k event for juniors (4 to 14 year olds) held every Sunday at 9:30am in Shelbourne Park, Shelbourne Road. It’s free to take part but you need to register online before your first session and bring along your barcode. More info here
