Limerick Events Guide – 5th-10th August

I was away last week but I must say I definitely had a touch of FOMO watching all the photos and videos from Twilight Thursday and the long weekend. It was great to see so many people out having fun in Limerick. This week, we have a lot more events for you to enjoy including the start of the Live at the Docklands series of concerts and some Midweek Movies in the Milk Market. From ‘Dickie to Richard’ – Richard Harris: Role of a Lifetime, an exhibition celebrating the extraordinary life and career of Richard Harris, the award-winning actor and global star who never lost his deep connection to Limerick, his hometown, is on display in the Hunt Museum from the Friday 4th July to Sunday 16th November. From his early years as a gifted athlete and lover of poetry to his rise on London’s stages and Hollywood screens, Harris forged a path marked by talent, resilience, and fearless reinvention. A collaboration between the Harris Family, the Hunt Museum, and University College Cork (UCC), the exhibition draws on the remarkable Harris Archive, generously donated to UCC by the actor’s family in 2022. Explore Limerick’s Stories, Streets & Heritage with Limerick Civic Trust. Walking tours run daily at 12pm from Arthur’s Quay Park. Learn the history of different sites, such as the historic bridges, the castle, St.Mary’s Cathedral, the Treaty Stone, and the beautiful river Shannon. We will also be taking in the different quarters of Limerick, and watching how the city developed! Tickets are 10 euro for adults, teenagers, and older children, but all children under 8 go free! More info here

A solo exhibition of contemporary artworks by Glin-based artist Anna Hutchinson, on display at Ebzery’s Boutique Café, Foynes. Through abstract forms created using freemotion machine embroidery, the works explore connections to land, sky, sea, memory, and emotional presence. Visitors are invited to slow their attention and reflect on the layered textures and shifting colours inspired by the Shannon Estuary. All works are available for sale. As part of the August in the City events, Movies in the Market presents The Greatest Showman (2017), a dazzling musical celebration of courage, dreams, and the power of imagination, starring Hugh Jackman as the legendary P.T. MURMUR presents Animal Animal, Martian Subculture and Delush in the Record Room at 9pm. Clare-based 4-piece Animal Animal (formerly Misvanity, Other Offences, The Regulators, Spunk Bubble, Curse These Metal Hands, Danny Dyer’s Chocolate Homunculus, Man Feelings, 13 Bastards) have been storming venues around the country since 2017. After almost a decade together the band have harnessed their live sound in a way that many live bands around the country struggle to. With a tasteful mix of fuzzy, intricate to the point of maddening guitar lines, groove-heavy basslines and thumping drums that leave many with prolonged spells of tinnitus after continuous exposure (the drummer included), Animal Animal is a truly one-of-a-kind band in the Irish scene and is not to be missed. Get ready for a Jurassic Takeover as life-like dinosaurs take over the Newcastle West Community Centre at 7pm for a roaring good time. Fanny Lumsden is in Dolans Upstairs at 8pm. Fanny Lumsden has established herself as one of the one of the genre’s most esteemed performers. Fanny is continuing to break the rules and confirm herself as ‘undoubtedly the brightest new (country) star of the current era’ (Capital news). Following up her ‘breakthrough’ album Fallow which took out the ARIA, 5 CMAA Golden Guitars and AIR Country Albums Fanny is mostly known for her regional Country Halls Tour and has recently taken her joyous, energetic and brilliant live show to debut in the UK to a packed Avalon Stage at Glastonbury. Sonic Saliva, the hottest new rising band within Soul, Rock’n Roll and Blues in Scandinavia, are in the Record Room at 8pm. Sonic Saliva is a brand new band formed by hook masters Irish man Richard Farrell and Fabian Vang-Lauridsen. Although an influence of old soul and blues music is strong and clear, the individuality and inspirations from other musical styles and fresh productions clearly shines through, spitting out an emotional sound that doesn’t feel antiquated or full of cliches. With one of the most unique and strongest voices on the scene, tight grooves combined with carefully crafted tunes and guitar mastery few will leave a show disappointed. Parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5k run that takes place every Saturday morning at 9.30am. Limerick has Parkruns at the UL Boathouse, Mungret Park and The Demense in Newcastle West. All you need to do is register once on parkrun.com to get your barcode and you can show up to any of the events.

Art4Limerick’s Art & Craft Popup is open at 19 Nicholas Street from 10.30am to 5.30pm, featuring the work of four members of their talented local artist collective.

PIGTOWN PICK OF THE WEEK Downbeat Records in the Wickham Way celebrate their first year in business with a Birthday Party from 2pm till late. 12 hours of their favourite record collectors and DJs from across Ireland, powered by Limerick’s only custom-built reggae soundsystem “Sibin Sound”. Limerick celebrates Daniel O’Connell’s 250th Birthday with a Limerick City Walking Tour from 3pm to 5pm. The Daniel O’Connell, the “Liberator”, was one of Ireland’s most influential political figures. The walk will begin at the striking Daniel O’Connell Monument on O’Connell Street before winding through Limerick’s Georgian Quarter, exploring how the city grew and evolved during O’Connell’s lifetime (1775–1847), a period of enormous political and social change in Ireland. As part of the August in the City events, a Summer Salsa Session with the ‘Wednesday Latino Limerick Dance Club takes place on Honan’s Quay from 5pm to 9pm. Step into a world of pulsating Afro-Latin dances and music, where the passion of Salsa, the allure of Kizomba and the sensuality of Bachata will sweep you off your feet. A Trans Writers Showcase, part of Limerick Alternative Pride and EVA International, takes place in STARLING from 6pm to 8pm. It highlights the artistic talents of the trans community in Limerick and wider Ireland that are not often seen, celebrated or published. The showcase aims to give trans authors at any stage of their writing practice or career a chance to share their work in a safe and non-judgemental environment. The writers taking part in this year’s showcase will have worked with Lyónn Wolf in the writing workshops that focus on the theme of revenge. Free event. More info here

Junior Parkrun is a free, fun, and friendly weekly 2k event for juniors (4 to 14 year-olds) held every Sunday at 9:30am in Shelbourne Park, Shelbourne Road. It’s free to take part but you need to register online before your first session and bring along your barcode. More info here

Croissant Run Club Limerick, a fun social running group, meets at 9.45am at Arthurs Quay Park for a 3.5km run (followed by a Crossiant). More info here

Get ready for a day packed with excitement, laughter and plenty of active play! This special event is designed for children aged 4 to 12 and offers a wide range of fun, inclusive activities that encourage teamwork, movement and creativity. Featuring Soft Archery, Tug of War, Target Games, Giant Jenga & Connect 4, Races and Relay Fun, Hopscotch and Parachute Games. Limerick Jazz presents Benjamin Boone Quartet on the Dolans Terrace at 5pm. Jazz aficionado Dr Benjamin Boone (Fresno University California) makes a welcome return to Limerick to play some of his original compositions from his very successful album Confluence The Irish Sessions along with some of the musicians living here who also performed and recorded with Ben, nemely guitarist Joe O Callaghan and John Daly, they will be joined by bassist Peter Hanagan on the occasion in what promises to be a memorable gig.
