Climate Action Week is a local initiative bringing together individuals, communities, businesses, and organizations to raise awareness, inspire action, and drive meaningful change in the fight against climate change. It takes place from Monday 28th April to Sunday 4th May. More info here
Whispers Of The Burren, an exhibition of Encaustic Landscapes by Kathleen Darcy and Anne Stewart, is on display in the People’s Museum from Tuesday 29th April to Tuesday 6th May. More info here
Limerick Opera Festival takes place from Thursday 1st to Saturday 10th May.The Festival hosts a number of events ranging from performances to workshops during the annual festival weeks in May of every year. More info here
Fleadh by the Feale will take place in Abbeyfeale over the May Bank Holiday weekend with some of the best traditional musicians, dancers, singers and storytellers from all across Ireland & further afield. More info here
The Limerick Zine Fest takes place in various venues across the city from Wednesday to Sunday. More info here
Shifting: A Group Exhibition By Guest Curator Mary Doyle Burke, is on display in the Limerick Museum until 30th April. This exhibition showcases multidisciplinary work by prominent Irish female artists: Aideen Barry, Bernadette Kiely, Louise Cherry, Cecilia Bullo, Pauline O’Connell and Ellen Martin-Friel. This body of work brings together artists whose practices span a wide range of mediums from painting, drawing and sculpture to installation works, performative art and print-making. More info here
The Panoramic Wheel is back in the Potato Market from Friday 25th April to Monday 5th May, running from 12pm to 9pm daily.Soar above the city and take in the stunning 360-degree views across Limerick’s skyline on the spectacular 36 metre panoramic wheel. More info here
URBANESQUE by Mike Byrne is on display in the Limerick City Gallery of Art until 11th May. Mike’s work is a continuous exploration of form and colour. He builds soft clay slabs into shapes that express the material’s malleability, and contrast that with sharp edges and severe cuts incised into the solid block forms. The surface patina is built up using multiple layers of coloured engobes and dry glaze. Each piece is fired numerous times until the desired depth of surface colour and texture is reached. Cut From The Same Cloth is on display in the Hunt Museum until 29th May. Arising from an art and health research collaboration the exhibition Cut From The Same Cloth centres around the fabric of our lives. A handwoven tapestry documents a unique community of members of local minority communities and biomedical researchers. Lorna Donlon is a tapestry weaver who merges the ancient art of weaving with scientific concepts. With a degree in Cell and Molecular Biology from the UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science, she creatively bridges art and science through tapestry and installations inspired by the scientific practices of categorising and labelling nature. BOW is a celebration of the individual pursuit of ideas, on display in the Limerick City Gallery of Art until June 8th. The exhibition is interested in how art resonates, soothes, and chimes with our common experience of life and living. The show includes Limerick native, and award-winning artist Stephanie Deady. Cork based Sarah O’Brien, who works from her studio near Kinsale. Dublin based Richard Proffitt with a studio in Balbriggan, and Fionna Murray who lives and works in Galway City. More info here
An Ciúnas/The Silence by Marianne Keating is on display in the Limerick City Gallery of Art until June 8th. Marianne Keating is a London-based Irish artist and researcher whose practice examines intersecting and overlooked narratives of Irish emigration to the Caribbean, particularly Jamaica, where the Irish were recruited as a new labour force after the abolition of enslavement. Keating’s multidisciplinary film installations combine a range of archival materials, found footage, newly shot footage, text, and sound. More info here
Monday 28th April
IFI@Belltable presents Blue Road: The Edna O’Brien Story in the Belltable at 5pm and 8pm. In 1960, a young Irish woman named Edna O’Brien wrote The Country Girls, the first of a sexually-frank trilogy of novels. Though the books were banned in Ireland, O’Brien became an international literary sensation, gaining fame and notoriety through her marriage and acrimonious divorce from Ernest Gebler; publications in the New Yorker and the creation of screenplays for British and US cinema. UCH Cinema’s Hans Zimmer Season continues with a screening of Inception in the University Concert Hall at 7.30pm. Dom Cobb is a thief with the rare ability to enter people’s dreams and steal their secrets from their subconsciouses, making him a hot commodity in the world of corporate espionage but costing him everything he loves. Cobb gets a chance at redemption when he is offered a seemingly impossiblejob: plant an idea in a CEO’s mind. Andy Irvine & Quilty are in Dolans Warehouse at 8pm. The Swedish band Quilty is a highly renowned interpreter of traditional Irish music and is considered to be the foremost band of the Irish folk music scene in Scandinavia. The band was formed in 1993 and has, over the last three decades, performed a huge number of concerts in Sweden, Germany and Norway, and created a wide range of collaborations with choirs and symphony orchestras. The final year class of the BA in Contemporary & Applied Theatre Studies at MIC is proud to present Cyrano, Virginia Gay’s joyous, gender-flipped retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac, in the Lime Tree Theatre at 8pm. Directed by Ann Blake, Cyrano is a witty and aching romance, a love letter to hope, to language and desire, and to the magic of theatre. Cyrano is the most interesting person in any room – a wordsmith, a charmer. She works twice as hard and runs twice as fast as the pretty boys, because she’s deeply ashamed of something about herself. Enter Roxanne: brilliant and beautiful, with a penchant for poetry and a way with words, just like Cyrano. But Roxanne only has eyes for Yan: hot, manly Yan; all brawn-and-no-brains Yan; who is dumbstruck around Roxanne. Probably shy, right? Until suddenly he starts saying the most amazing things. The Southill Community Drama Group are back yet again with a brand new original play, A Little Bit of Magic by Stacy O’Connell in the Belltable at 8pm. A Little Bit of Magic tells the story of a group of care home residents who take a day trip to the Burren with their driver, carer and event organiser. When they arrive, they are left alone with the tour guide who then decides to take an urgent call. Feeling disgruntled and abandoned they decide to explore the Burren alone, only to get lost in the wild. Tension builds as relationship secrets between the residents unfold and a visit from the cutest faery who wants her historic fantasy to be taken seriously. Will they make it back to the centre in one piece? Find out in this hilarious, fast-paced comedy as the chase begins! Tickets €10. More info here
The Limerick Astronomy Club will be holding a talk on Asteroids, Dinosaurs and Mass Extinctions in Mary Immaculate College at 8pm. This talk will examine the compelling evidence linking asteroid impacts to mass extinction events, with special focus on the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago. Saturday 3rd May (Riverfest)
As part of Riverfest on the Shannon, the Riverfest Fun Swim takes place from 9.30am to 12.30pm from the Curraghgour Boat Club to slipway on Clancy Strand. After your Swim/Dip, enjoy some rolls and soup and well as a Sauna by Serenity Saunas. Then stay around for a chat or head into town to the Milk Market or watch the other actitives on the river or head to the BBQ’s and many more wonderful and exciting events being held this weekend. Cars at the Cathedral takes place in St Mary’s Cathedral from 12pm, offering a rare opportunity to explore a stunning collection of cars and motorcycles, from the earliest horseless carriages to the latest supercars. This one-of-a-kind event will feature vehicles that span over a century of automotive history. The Solar & Energy Efficiency Show takes place in St Michael’s Rowing Club at 12pm. This energy show has local companies and the local Credit Union presenting solar panels, heat pumps, air conditioning, electric cars and bikes to the public. The Limerick Opera Festival will be on the street with their amazing opera soloists performing some much-loved and popular operatic arias, duets and trios. They look forward to meeting all their regular followers and making many new friends during their on-street performances. They will also entertain you with operatic arias, particularly from Carmen. They’ll start at Colbert Station at 12.30pm before heading to Hook & Ladder Sarsfield Street for 1.30pm and Lower Thomas Street at 2.30pm before finishing at the Bandstand in the People’s Park at 3.30pm. Fab Lab Limerick are holding a Don’t Fear The Repair event in the UL City Campus from 2pm to 4pm. Don’t Fear the Repair is a bad pun, and a continuing series of repair workshops where our volunteer reprairers will help you repair your broken household items, such as phones, tablets, laptops, clothes, furniture, hi-fis, power tools… we’ve even repaired an old gramophone before! We hope to teach you how to repair things yourself if you’re confident enough to join us in the repair, and ultimately aim to promote a spirit of self-repair and a sustainable circular economy. The Limerick Book Fair takes place at the Limerick Protestant Young Men’s Association (LPYMA), 97 O’Connell Street from 10am. Antiquarian and secondhand bookdealers from around Ireland will be showcasing books, coins and postcards. Free event. More info here
