Limerick: A Different Kind of Energy announced as theme for St. Patrick’s Festival

“Limerick: A Different Kind of Energy” has been unveiled by Limerick City and County Council as the captivating theme for 2024 Limerick St. Patrick’s Festival. The festival aims to electrify both visitors and locals over the festival weekend in March. The theme encapsulates the city and county’s constant evolution, where past and present combine to generate Limerick’s unique energy.

Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Gerald Mitchell says: “From Viking roots to the cosmopolitan present, Limerick’s heritage and tradition pulsate from every corner. For this year’s Limerick St. Patrick’s Festival, we are inviting the world to witness a vibrant blend of history and modernism, creating ‘A Different Kind of Energy’ that defines our city and county.”

As well as celebrating Limerick’s history, the Treaty County is looking to the future with groundbreaking green initiatives. The festival will highlight the potential for offshore wind energy generation on the Shannon Estuary as a monumental step towards sustainable energy for the region.

Mayor Mitchell continues: “Through the +CityxChange programme, Limerick is at the forefront of European cities working towards sustainable, innovative energy solutions. This places us on the global map as leaders in shaping a greener future and we are excited to share our dynamic spirit for generations to come.”

The traditional St. Patrick’s Day Parade takes place on Sunday 17th March. It will be followed the next day by the 52nd Limerick International Band Championship along with a musical Jamboree at Arthur’s Quay Park on Monday 18th March. Both parades will follow the same route as 2023, starting on O’Connell Street before moving on to Henry Street and ending at Arthur’s Quay Park. Additional fringe events surrounding the parade and championship will be announced in the weeks to come.

Limerick City and County Council’s Festival and Events Officer, Eugene Crimmins is extending this invitation: “To all companies, groups, clubs, and organisations of all sizes, we ask: What is your Limerick? What do you want people to know about your county? Help us showcase ‘Limerick: A Different Kind of Energy.’ Join us in experiencing Limerick’s unique energy and show support for our green initiatives.”
