This week’s Limerick Events Guide was a bit delayed because there was so much going on that it took a bit longer to write up. We’ve got the What Next Dance Festival, Mary I Charity Week, Valentine’s Day, Treaty United and Munster Matches, and the Milford Care Centre 10km Walk/Run on top of all the usual live music, comedy, sport and more.

It’s Mary I Charity Week (formerly RAG Week) this week with lots of events going on both on and off campus.

The 8th edition of What Next Dance Festival will take place 10-15 February 2025 at Dance Limerick. The festival gathers together performers from across Ireland and internationally over six days of discovery and celebration. Through performances, talks and workshops, is year’s programme offers us perspectives on relationships, resistance, liberation, society and how we want to be together in our communities. What Next is a special space for exploration and conversation, an opportunity to gather and meet the joy, curiosities and pleasure of dance and dancing together. More info here

Discover Kwaidan – Encounters with Lafcadio Hearn at The Hunt Museum, showcasing an extraordinary collection of prints by 20 Japanese artists and 20 Irish artists. Inspired by Hearn’s ghostly tales, the works reflect a range of techniques and artistic perspectives, each transforming these eerie stories into compelling visual pieces. The exhibition explores the intersection of folklore, storytelling, and the shared cultural heritage between Ireland and Japan. Runs until 22nd February. More info here 

Kian Benson-Bailes’s exhibition Culchie boy, I love you / Grá mo chroí thú, mo chábóigín féin is on display in the Limerick City Gallery of Art until March 30th. The Exhibition comprises of sculpture, digital & material collage, musical instruments, ceramics, textiles, woodwork, and live sculptural sound elements. Originally from Sligo, Kian Benson Bailes received a BA in Visual Arts Practice from IADT, Dublin in 2016 and currently lives and works in Dublin. Recent multidisciplinary work has examined Ireland’s language and colonial history – as well as craft, folklore and art – to re-evaluate a sense of place and self. More info here 

Séan Cotter’s exhibition Boulder Milt on display in the Limerick City Gallery of Art until March 30th. Séan Cotter is an Irish artist who lives in Cavan and is a graduate of National College of Art & Design, Dublin.  He has exhibited extensively in solo and group shows in Ireland and internationally. Boulder Milt is his first solo show at Limerick city Gallery of Art (LCGA).  Séan has been on many residencies in Iceland, Finland.  These residencies have been a source of real concern about the way in which this planet, earth, is changing due to Climate Change.  In the early weeks of January 2025 we witnessed the devastating impact on people, their lives and the landscape in California of the wild fires – the direct result of our disregard for nature and how this has led to catastrophic consequences. Mary I Charity Week daytime events kick off in the SU Lounge at 12pm with Bar Games from 12pm to 2pm and Board Games from 2pm to 4pm.

The IFI@Belltable Film Series presents Nosferatu (2024) in the Belltable at 5pm and 8pm. Set in 1838; Estate agent Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) is tasked with securing a property in the town of Wisberg for the mysterious Count Orlok, a commission that takes him to his client’s castle in the Carpathian Mountains where nothing is quite what it seems, least of all his sinister host who betrays a macabre fixation for Hutter’s new wife, Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp). UCH Cinema’s Hans Zimmer Season continues with Thelma and Louise in the University Concert Hall at 7.30pm. Eager to escape the routine of their everyday lives, two lifelong friends from Arkansas, bullied housewife Thelma and emotionally drained waitress Louise, sneak off on a sunny summer morning without saying goodbye. It’s Industry Night in Pharmacia from 8pm

The Mary I Charity Week County Colours Night featuring Ruaile Buaile is on in Dolans at 8.30pm. Ruaile Buaile are an Irish based 5 piece twisted-trad band, based in the midlands of Ireland. The group formed in 2011. In 2021, world renowned musician Cathal Guinan (Fiddle) joined the band, followed by Seán Bourke (banjo) in 2023. Along with original members Niall Kelly (Vocals and Guitar), Jack Godley (Percussion) and Shane Lynam (Vocals and Bass), the quintet are entertaining audiences with a bigger than ever sound. From upbeat old Irish favourites, ground thumping trad, and unique twists on recent day classics, this collective are bringing their energy to masses around Ireland and further afield.Tickets €10. Mary I Charity Week daytime events kick off in the SU Lounge at 12pm with Sock-it (Come along and style a new pair of socks) from 12pm to 2pm and Pop Up Gaeltacht from 2pm to 4pm.

The Friends of the Hunt Museum Lunchtime Lecture, ‘Ramblings of an Episcopal Railway Enthusiast’, will be held at 1pm in the Captain’s Room at The Hunt Museum. The Rt Revd. Michael Burrows, like many members of the clergy, has been a lifelong railway enthusiast and is a member of the Irish Railway Record Society. He has a particular interest in the railway history of the various places he has lived. During the lecture, he intends to share a few thoughts and anecdotes, focusing on the railway heritage of the region, highlighting its eccentricities and charm. Free event. More info here

A screening of Burkitt, a powerful documentary on the remarkable story of Irish surgeon Dr. Denis Burkitt will take place in the University of Limerick School of Medicine at 6pm. Tickets €5. More info here

Stories for Valentine’s is the theme February’s Storytelling Street Sessiun at Treaty City Brewery at 7pm. Love in all its forms – sad, funny, charming, silly. The Olllam are in Dolans Warehouse at 8pm. With a name aptly deriving from the old Irish for a grand master of a skill, the olllam is a Transatlantic collective of formidable talent, marrying stunning instrumental virtuosity, Irish tradition, and Detroit’s post-rock psych-sensibility. Their genre-defying compositions are lush with cyclical trance-like melodies, co-written by Belfast uilleann piper/whistle player John McSherry, his US protégé Tyler Duncan, and master-drummer Michael Shimmin, whose intricate, often complex, rhythms are then underpinned in recording by the phenomenal bass-playing genius of Joe Dart (Vulfpeck, Fearless Flyers.) The Seven presents The Ocelots in the Record Room at 8pm for their 2025 Album Release Tour. The Ocelots are twin brothers Ashley and Brandon Watson from Wexford, now residing in Leipzig, Germany. Building on the folk-rock essence of their debut, the duo are excited to announce the release of their highly anticipated second album, Everything, When Said Slowly, set for February 2025. This album unveils a richer, more expansive sound, masterfully produced by long-time collaborators Cillian and Lorcan Byrne (Ailbhe Reddy, Susan O’Neill). Rebel Rebel, a 6 piece (nine-piece for larger gigs) tribute to David Bowie, plays Dolans Warehouse at 8pm. They faithfully recreate the most popular songs from Bowie’s extensive back catalogue.  The band themselves are fans and have a deep respect for the man and his music. The set for this show is built on Bowie’s most loved and enduring songs and the band have worked hard at re-creating the sound and look of a David Bowie concert. Tickets €25. More info here

Remembering Joe Dolan – Celebrating a Life is on in the University Concert Hall at 8pm. Joe’s brother Ben, who shared the stage with his younger brother for 47 fun-filled years will highlight Joe’s successful singing career. He will be joined on stage by Joe’s Niece Sandra, Nephews Adrian and Ray with Singer Karen Carroll and members of Joe’s original backing band. A nostalgic evening of hit after hit. Tickets €30. Parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5k run that takes place every Saturday morning at 9.30am. Limerick has Parkruns at the UL Boathouse, Mungret Park and The Demense in Newcastle West. All you need to do is register once on parkrun.com to get your barcode and you can show up to any of the events.

The What Next Festival presents Guests in conversation at 10am in the Dance Limerick Performance Space. Hear from festival artists and other dance artists working in Ireland and internationally today. Pay what you can. More info here

Limerick Printmakers are running a Step by Step Silkscreen Weekend Course on Saturday and Sunday at 10am. Participants will learn in a practical way, completing each step themselves & also learning through observing others in the group, with full tutor support. The course level is aimed both at beginners & those who are eager to refresh their existing silkscreen skills. Tickets €190/170/145. More info here

Art4Limerick’s Art & Craft Popup is open at 19 Nicholas Street from 10.30am to 5.30pm, featuring the work of four members of their talented local artist collective.

Seoda Shows presents Ryley Walker in Dolans Upstairs at 8pm. Ryley Walker began his career in the early 2010s, after moving from Illinois’ provincial town of Rockford, and settling into Chicago’s independent scene. After a slew of cassette and vinyl releases, Tompkins Square put out his debut album in 2014, which was then followed up by the Dead Oceans released Primrose Green a year later. Join Sandy Kelly and very special guest, Marc Roberts, for an intimate evening of new songs, old songs and life stories in the Belltable at 8pm. In 2023, Sandy Kelly released her autobiography ‘In My Own Words’. In this live concert, Sandy will give a first hand peek into some of her life’s stories, intertwined within a set of her classic hit songs and new songs from her recent album released in tandem with her autobiography. Junior Parkrun is a free, fun, and friendly weekly 2k event for juniors (4 to 14 year-olds) held every Sunday at 9:30am in Shelbourne Park, Shelbourne Road. It’s free to take part but you need to register online before your first session and bring along your barcode. More info here

Croissant Run Club Limerick, a fun social running group, meets at 9.45am at Arthurs Quay Park for a 3.5km run (followed by a Crossiant). More info here

Art4Limerick’s Art & Craft Popup is open at 19 Nicholas Street from 10.30am to 5.30pm, featuring the work of four members of their talented local artist collective.

PIGTOWN PICK OF THE WEEK The Milford Care Centre 10km Run/Walk 2025 will take place at the UL Sports Arena at 12 noon. All proceeds raised will facilitate the development and advancement of Milford’s initiatives to the Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary communities. Additionally, fundraising efforts will be instrumental in addressing individual care needs, by procuring specialised equipment to enhance the comfort and quality of life for those facing life-limiting illnesses. Comedian Shane Todd is in Dolans Warehouse at 7.30pm. The host of Tea With Me podcast is fresh off the back of a world tour and a record-breaking run of 16 shows at Belfast’s Grand Opera House. Northern Ireland’s (self-titled) prince of comedy is returning with a brand new laughter-packed show. ‘Full House’ is Shane’s eleventh solo show and promises to be his best yet. Tickets €27.
