When putting together the Limerick Events Guide each week, there are some weeks that are quiet(ish) and some that are busy. Then there are weeks like this that can only be described as massive. We’ve got Féile na Gréine, the Live at the Docklands Gigs and the Film Track Limerick Film Festival all coming up this weekend and that’s only the start of it. If you’re not in Limerick this week, you’ll be missing out.

Our Pigtown Pick of the Week is Féile Na Gréine, Limerick’s annual DIY music festival returns to the streets of the city this week with 30+ acts playing across several venues including Pharmacia, the Record Room, Treaty City Brewery, Crew Brewing, Mother Macs, Ormston House and Starling. This weekend, Dolans are hosting the third edition of the Live at The Docklands series with Dec Pierce’s Block Rockin BeatsHermitage Green and James Blunt playing the Marquee at the Dock Road venue. Check out guide here

The FilmTrack Limerick Film Festival, a weekend of events celebrating Independent Filmmaking in Limerick, takes place from the 23rd to the 25th August. Screenings, interviews, panels and networking event taking place across the weekend. The highlight will be the ONE SHOT Programme where filmmakers will Script, Shoot and Screen a short film over the course of the weekend! All events are free admission with an event Wristband. National Heritage Week 2024 runs from Saturday 17th to Sunday 25th August with events across the country. More info here 

The Ashford Festival will take place in Ashford Village from Thursday 22nd to Sunday 25th August. A number of events will be taking place as part of the festival including a cycle race, live music, dog show, vintage show, food, art and craft fair, a family fun-day and much more. More info here

The Last Act Exhibition by Marie Hanlon & Rhona Clarke runs in the Limerick City Gallery of Art until 25th August. Last Act is a large-scale synchronised video installation made in collaboration with composer Rhona Clarke. The work presents the climate crises as something both real and abstract, as such it mirrors the human response to a changing earth. More info here

The In a Dream in a Happy House Exhibition by the Shell/Ter Artist Collective runs in the Limerick City Gallery of Art until 26th August. In a Dream in a Happy House is S/TAC’s third show to date and their first show that focuses solely on the collective itself rather than through the lens of a historical collection or role as artistic shelter. Featuring work by artists Diana Copperwhite, Allyson Keehan, Niamh McGuinne, Sharon Murphy and Geraldine O’Neill. More info here

Nature’s Narrative, an artistic tour of Clare and its coastlines by artist Helen Martin, is on display in the Hunt Museum Cafe during July and August. More info here

August is Craft Month across Ireland with all kinds of events going on. More info here

There’s an Exhibition of Ukrainian Art in the Friars Gate Theatre until 31st August

The Creepy Crawlies Love/Hate exhibition is in Hunt Museum until November 21st. This innovative exhibition aims to engage, educate, and inspire visitors of all ages through the fascinating world of bugs and their crucial roles in our biodiversity and daily lives. “Creepy Crawlies: Love/Hate,” is part of The Hunt Museum’s thematic focus of the year – biodiversity. Discovering Irish Gems, a free talk by Public History Graduate Student Joanne Mapp on Five Fascinating Irish Objects found in the British Collections, takes place in Lough Gur Visitor Centre at 1pm. One of the items included in the talk is a Viking Sword from Lough Gur. More info here

As part of Déardaoin Rúnda (Thursday Nights at the Museum), join Vlad Smishkewych and Yonit Kosovske for an enchanting musical journey spanning five centuries in the Hunt Museum at 7pm. This concert features a rich tapestry of voice, harpsichord, hurdy-gurdy, and lyre, showcasing treasures from 12th-century intercultural troubadour songs to 17th-century solo harpsichord toccatas and suites. Irish Wildlife Sounds takes place in Askeaton Community Centre at 7pm. Ornithologist Seán Ronayne (Irish Wildlife Sounds) visits Askeaton this Heritage Week to talk birdsong and all things nature. Free event. More info here

As part of the Mayoral August Festivities, the Pop-up Cinema is showing a screening of Dune Part 1 at 8pm in the People’s Museum. Dance Limerick and the Limerick Mental Health Association are colloborating for a series of Movement for your Mind Dance Workshops in the Dance Limerick Studio from 9.30am to 11am. There’s a recommended €2 donation per class but if cost is an issues, please let the organisers know. Everyone over 18 is welcome. No upper age limit. No experience needed. As part of the FilmTrack Limerick Film Festival, The Graceless Age – The Ballad of John Murry is screening at 3pm in the Belltable. The story of American singer-songwriter John Murry who was on the cusp of greatness until he became addicted to heroin, creatively exhausted, and went to Ireland a broken man. As part of the FilmTrack Limerick Film Festival, the second edition of the Engine Shorts programme will be screened at the Belltable at 6.30pm, with six brand new short films by some of the best new talent around. Parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5k run that takes place every Saturday morning at 9.30am. Limerick has Parkruns at the UL Boathouse, Mungret Park and The Demense in Newcastle West. All you need to do is register once on parkrun.com to get your barcode and you can show up to any of the events.

The Wickham Way Market Stalls &  Food Court will be open 10am to 3pm (food court open til late).

A Walking Football Tournament for older men & women, featuring inter-provincial teams, the first of its kind in Ireland, is taking placefrom 10.30am – 5pm at the UL Sports Arena. It will bring together 20+ teams including 3 women’s teams (up to 30 women), and the remainder men’s teams from the four provinces and Dublin in various age groups (over 50s, over 60s and over 70s). We have also invited challenger teams from the UK Irish diaspora, including London Irish, Midlands Irish and North & South UK Irish teams. Over 200 players are expected to take part. Breathe Better Yoga hosts Park Yoga every Saturday (weather dependent) in the People’s Park from 11 a.m. It is donation-based. Please bring your own yoga mat.

Saturday Arts & Crafts for Children takes place from 11am to 4pm at Watch House Cross Library. A fresh set of craft materials will be provided. Collect your art materials from the library desk and make something to take home, to display in the library or both! Communities and individuals across the Ballyhoura area are invited to join in celebrating Ukraine Independence Day at the Friar’s Gate Theatre in Kilmallock from 11am. This fun-filled event aims to bring together local and Ukrainian communities in a day filled with fun, culture, and unity, open to everyone regardless of nationality. More info here

As part of the FilmTrack Limerick Film Festival, Get your Music on Screen takes place at 1.30pm in ENGINE. Designed for both musicans and filmmakers, the Panel session, will look at how filmmakers can discover and license music, and how musicians can promote and place thier music. More info here

As part of the Film Track Limerick Film Festival, In Conversation with Director Tadhg O’Sullivan takes place at 3pm in ENGINE on Cecil St. Tadhg is an artist and film-maker working primarily in non-fiction cinema. Often working with literary sources and cinematic archive, his films seek to evoke the timelessness of human experience, and to illuminate the present moment through ideas from the distant past. SOLD OUT The Féile na Gréine madness continues in the Record Room from 5.30pm to 9.30pm with Some images of Paradise, White Sage, Ellie O’Neill and Tongue Bundle. This is a free, ticked event. 

Meet the Goddess Sionna, a folklore presentation about the local Goddess Sionna followed by a sunset stroll to the river that bears her name, takes place in Kings Island Community Centre at 6.30pm. The event will begin with a talk from folklorist and writer Heather Canfield about her search for local legends of the Goddess Sionna, and all the other wonderful tales of the Shannon river she’s encountered in the search for its namesake. Then you will take a short sunset walk along the river to the nearby Verdant Place Bathing Area. This is where King’s Island residents have come to connect with the Shannon river for centuries. There you can immerse a hand or foot in the river (or even take a quick dip if you’d like) to have a full multisensory experience of the legends we just explored. Tickers €11.11. More info here

As part of the Film Track Limerick Film Festival, there’s a Film Screening of Woken at 8pm in the Belltable. A pregnant Anna (Kellyman) wakes up on a remote island of which she has no memory and to faces she doesn’t recognise. Forced to re-learn everything about the world, she will need to do all that she can to protect herself and her unborn child. Friel’s debut feature is a sci-fi dystopian thriller beginning with the human race on the verge of extinction. The Screening will be followed by an in-person conversation with director Alan Friel and Producer John McDonnell. More info here

As part of the FilmTrack Limerick Film Festival, Underground Shorts at the Crypt takes place in a Secret Venue. Experience a short film screening with a difference. The event takes place underground in a church cyrpt for a programme of genre-bending short films brought to you by Film in Limerick. Over 18’s only. The Limerick Show takes place in the Limerick Racecourse from 9am. Up to 15,000 visitors, 1,000 competitors and 150 trade exhibitors will descend on the Racecourse to experience a unique event which aims to bring the people of Limerick City and County together. Run 061’s weekly Sunday Long Run starts at 9.30am at the UL Sports Arena. This is a 65-minute run Time on Legs Run. Open to runners of all levels. More info here

Junior Parkrun is a free, fun, and friendly weekly 2k event for juniors (4 to 14 year-olds) held every Sunday at 9:30am in Shelbourne Park, Shelbourne Road. It’s free to take part but you need to register online before your first session and bring along your barcode. More info here

Croissant Run Club Limerick, a fun social running group, meets at 9.45am at Arthurs Quay Park for a 3.5km run (followed by a Crossiant). More info here

There’s an Open House Event in Goggin Cottage, Kildimo for National Heritage Week from 10am to 4pm. The Irish Landmark Trust’s latest conservation project – be among the first to visit and discover the history behind these ancient walls. Free event. More info here

Meet the Goddess Sionna, a folklore presentation about the local Goddess Sionna followed by a sunset stroll to the river that bears her name, takes place in Kings Island Community Centre at 6.30pm. The event will begin with a talk from folklorist and writer Heather Canfield about her search for local legends of the Goddess Sionna, and all the other wonderful tales of the Shannon river she’s encountered in the search for its namesake. Then you will take a short sunset walk along the river to the nearby Verdant Place Bathing Area. This is where King’s Island residents have come to connect with the Shannon river for centuries. There you can immerse a hand or foot in the river (or even take a quick dip if you’d like) to have a full multisensory experience of the legends we just explored. Tickers €11.11. More info here
